My dad was in the army from 1942-1962. as a newly minted forward observer he was allowed to choose his weapon. He chose the Thompson and after one day of toting it around said "to hell with that shit" and traded it back in for the carbine,which he had shot expert with in basic.

I had a Norrell STEn MKII. It was super easy to hit with.
And they made them for like $7 with mags and ammo. And dropped the all over Europe for the resistance. As well as the clever things they did, like made the extractors and the extractor grooves thinner on STEn ammo... So the Krauts couldn't use it. But the Brits could use all the German ammo they wanted. HEE HEE HEE. I truly believe they were the deadliest SMG of WWII for amount of dead bad guys. The movie, Allied with Brad Pitt, illustrates this perfectly

Never shot any of them except the M1 Carbine, but the videos of MP40s I see being fired make it seem extremely controllable and accurate, probably due to the low powered 9mm round and the weight of the weapon. That has to count for something.
The PPsH41 would also be a contender for its reliability, magazine capacity, and the power of its 7.62x25mm round. There was a reason the Germans loved to use captured ones. |

My pick would be the M2 carbine, followed by the M1, followed by the Ppsh-43. It all comes down to the ballistics of the .30 carbine for me. When compared to the '06 rifle cartridge the .30 carbine is a massive compromise, but compared to a 9mm or .45 you gain far more range.
Of the WW2 and early cold war subguns, I own the M2, M1A1 Thompson, Swedish K, and Sterling. The Swedish K and Sterling are amazing guns but didn't serve in the war. The M2 is a great little blaster for approx. 80-100 rounds of full auto burst fire. After that it overheats and becomes unusable. I'm convinced that the full auto feature on these was for emergency purposes, sort of like on the Reising. It's an excellent PDW that can be forced to play the role of SMG for a few mags if necessary. |

I've fired a Thompson. it was a lot of fun, but it would be far from my first choice.
