By losing control of legislation, power of the purse, after brutal opposition from democrats(seriously brutal), they now have the opportunity to return the favor.

The republicans are looking to exact revenge and so are we. We only lost weak republicans in the house. We gained in the Senate and Trump has been relentlessly beating the left with Twitter, his media strategy and his executive policies.

We are definitely stronger now than we were.

House Republicans are as powerless as House Democrats were when they were in the minority. Senate Republicans don’t have Flake etc but far more are up for re-election in 2020 than in 2018. They saw what happened to their House counterparts. I expect lots of new Flakes to emerge.

The political power we have now, in Trump's favor, is stronger than we had then. Agreed?
How can you possibly conclude that losing the House makes Trump or the Rs stronger? There goes the power of the purse. Here comes investigations and committees with D chairs.

Most House Republicans have never been in the minority while a Representative. And in the House, the minority party barely gets to use the bathrooms let alone do anything substantial. The Senate needs 60 votes for most things, whereas the House is a simple majority. So holding the Senate alone is not equal to holding the House alone.

They just elected a group of radical hardcore communist in the Democrat house majority. Most of the others that are there are inept old and stupid.

We will take advantage of the situation. Pelosi is powerless at the moment and has no influence over republicans in the senate.

And in the mean time, Dems keep sending over basically the same budget as last year that was passed by a then Republican house. How do you think the optics will play for the middle third of the country during the next election? McConnell is aware of this, and it only gets worse with time. There are a lot more Republican seats up for reelection this time around. It's a huge political risk that really only benefits Trump.

If Trump wanted to play chicken for wall money, he should have started that game when it was just him vs the GOP congress. Now that they lost the house, he just added another player to the game.

Holy Shit.

How do you think that plays for the middle third of the country? The Dems are proposing the SAME spending bill that the Republicans previously passed TWICE. The only reason it hasn't passed, it because Trump will not sign it.

Trump assembled a political bomb. Unfortunately for us, the most likely people at this point for it to blow up on is the Republican party or Trump himself. He played a stupid game and so far it's looking like he will be the one winning the stupid prize.

As much as it sucks knowing the dem's and their msm lap-dogs are going to spin this into some sort of victory for Pelosi over Trump, this is the right call by Trump.

There is no point in doing a State of the Union right now when all that is going to get aired for the week following is Dem's blaming/bashing him for the shut down offered as "position opinion" of the address.

It's the House's responsibility to pass a budget that they know will get signed. The ball is in their court. Trump is just fulfilling a campaign promise that also happens to be a national security obligation by his office.

As far as not doing this with a Republican majority and putting the current Republicans up against a wall. Fuck 'em. They had a chance to get this done just like Trump did. They knew this wold be coming down the pike at some point after 2016. They want to put the weight on Trump to do all the dirty work then cry about it later.

The middle third of the country?

I'm part of the middle and I say we need a fucking wall that keeps these illegals from looting and ruining our country.

The only budget that came from the house of reps that the Senate and Trump approved of was in December before the new house took their seats.

The political bomb will be rolled into the house of reps before this is over.

I'm amazed I have to clarify this.

When I say "middle third of the country", I'm not talking geographically. I am talking politically... As in they have no loyalty to one side or the other (swing voters if you will).

That isn't you.

Show me a poll that shows that swing voters have a wall or illegal immigration as their primary concerns (And that they favor the wall and oppose illegal immigration)?

I never thought Trump winning/hitlery losing would usher in the kind of outright disaster that it has. Massive victories by the entrenched left. Emboldened socialists running openly to destroy the constitution. Accelerated statewide gun control. Border patrol and uscg not being paid...

The Federal Government is truly, irreparably broken and will never, ever be fixed.

I have known America was gone for some time but it looks like we are truly and completely fucked as a functioning nation-state and we will never recover or return to anything that resembles sanity. Not ever.

The next few years are really going to suck.

I wish I could disagree but I can't.

I was one of those on here that played down the civil conflict/war talk. Mainly for logistical reasons as the left isn't going to travel hundreds or thousands of miles en mass to instigate violence with a well armed, rural population.

Then this last general election happened and supposedly Texas and Arizona are purple now. They have infiltrated every medium to large population center, everywhere with a college and community college. They don't have to travel, they can just do what they want and put the ball in our court.

If 2020 is even close, or if Trump wins, we will see violence. I still don't know about open conflict though as the right might just take it and keep their heads down and go to work every day.

You mean the sort of meaningless part?

Everyone votes for the people who they think will do what they want. For most people that means they'll vote for the same party election after election because what people care about doesn't tend to change and political parties in a two party system will inexorably polarize such that no matter what issues you care about you'll have one obvious choice.

My point is that the things you care about are almost certaintly not the things that the 'middle third', if there is still such a thing, cares about. Everyone wants to believe they are independently minded and vote based on a careful analysis of the candidates and issues but the truth is virtually no one does that. We're all partisan as can be.

Cite the proof that Pelosi looks petty in any meaningful way that proves useful to Trump?

I know that arf.com thinks she’s a petty bitch. But the polls seem to be going against Trump on this.

While a majority are in support of border enforcement, the support on a literal, continuous wall all the way across the border isn’t that strong. Nor does a majority consider that issue worth shutting down the government over.

The Dems are offering money on border security, but they are holding the line on a literal, continuous wall. So why will swing voters who will hear the Dems say that they are offering compromise on border security side with Trump when Trump is insisting on literal wall money and the swing voter wants the .gov reopened more than they want a wall?

It’s all rhetoric. Both sides are pointing at the other and saying “your fault”. But at the end of the day, if a majority don’t want the .gov shut down over Trump not getting his wall, the fault for that is going to fall on Trump. That’s where the polls are moving.

I don't believe in "swing voters."   Are there really people who have no foundation for their belief system that is not already aligned with either party?

It is hard enough to accept that people subscribe to the liberal views on matters.

How do you not believe in them? They decide every election. The most ill-informed people who have no core beliefs get to decide every election based on whatever whim they are feeling that day.

Lol. seriously?

yes and those people are what wins elections.

Some of y'all really need to get outside of your little bubbles and see what the real world is like. It's not nearly the black and white, GOP vs DEM, right vs left etc. etc. world GD paints it to be.

Yes.  We call those people "morons" - and they vote.
I just agreed with you and I really want to take it back now.

You might very well be right.

If it doesn't happen, it will be because #nevertrumpers would prefer our country be over run by third world moochers rather than Trump be successful.

It won't be Trump's fault.

It will be the fault of those who thought that Trump couldn't and shouldn't be president and would rather our nation be destroyed in spiteful, petty vengeance over hurt feelz.

Nothing personal.

Bullshit. Now your trying to build in your excuse.

He couldn’t get a wall because a literal, continuous border wall was never going to happen for very sane and practical reasons.

But the firebrands on the right got played by Trump on that issue. But rather than eat that crow, now they’ve got to manufacture excuses to save their own face for why it won’t happen.

The problem he has is that the Dems are outflanking him on that issue. They’re offering border security money. So now Trump is saying “must be a wall” when there are non-partisan experts saying “a literal wall is impractical”. So in terms of how it plays to swing voters, Trump has to go against not only Pelosi, but also against the non-partisan experts who think it’s foolish.

How is that going to play out in the propaganda machine?

He’s going to be ridiculed as inept for not getting the wall and then ridiculed as a fool for insisting on it despite advice to do otherwise. The truth is he’s probably known all along it wasn’t feasible but knew it would gain him votes on the right.

But we didn’t abandon him after no Obamacare repeal, and we didn’t after the bumpstock ban. So why would he think we will if he caves on the wall?

I think it's hilarious to watch fools underestimate someone who has been doubted since he began his run.

Who are the fools?

The ones who underestimate him or the ones still holding their breath waiting for an Obamacare repeal?

I mean, did we lose the House because we didn’t repeal Obamacare?

Trump's position is the shutdown ends when Congress votes money for the wall.  The SOTU address isn't a bargaining chip to Trump.  It's meaningless at this point.  So why not stand firm and make the SOTU a victory speech in the faces of the opposition on their home field?  It's the political equivalent of pissing on them to establish dominance.

The right strategy if you ask me.  I'm glad we have a President who is fresh out of fucks to give when it comes to Pelosi's Congress.

Well, I guess he better get that wall funding right?

I mean, the Dems have already offered money to fix the existing wall and to increase border security measures other than building more wall.

Where’s the room for compromise? Who looks unreasonable for not giving in to the other side’s ultimatum?

But Trump chanted “build the wall” and everyone on the right took him at his word despite some pro-border people saying, “Wait a minute, he means a continuous wall across the whole border?”

Trump paints himself into corners with his bombastic showboating. No, wait, that’s not showboating, that’s 3D chess.
