Ok, just got back from seeing it the 3rd time, and I came away with a new theory on who is Snoke....
Wait for it.... Luke Skywalker is Snoke. Concentrate your feelings and think about it. -The Internet nearly broke with "where's Luke?" -We waited the entire film to see Luke. A lot of fan complaints about that. Well, the joke is on us. We HAVE seen him already! -much like Darth Sideous/Palpatine, Snoke /Luke is running both sides of the conflict -Both charachters are hiding -Fan theories ran amok with predictions ok Luke being Kylo-Ren. Perfect red Herring. -Why does Snoke want to find Luke so bad than? He doesn't, he wants to draw out Ray any way he can. -Who hid Ray on Jakku than? TBD. -Kylo Ren is going to the Dark side not to be an apprentice but to destroy Luke and bring balance to the Force. Killing his father, Han, to get there really was a great conflict for him. Kylo Ren (Ben) really will become the redeeming hero. Mind Blown... |

Just got done seeing it. Loved it. This coming from a hardcore Star Wars fan. Dang near was brought to tears a couple times from emotion. I think they channeled the OT great but the film still had it own identity. No over the top CGI, the music of course was great, the humor was in line with the OT(no jar jar binks ) it had some funny one liners but not enough to take away from the seriousness. Wanted to get back in line and see it again.

Saw it on Christmas Day. Loved it. I noticed the flaws. I'm a SW lifer, was in my late teens when ANH premiered. That said, I noticed something in TFA that I haven't seen in this thread, and I've read the WHOLE damn thing. Did anyone else notice the ring that Leia was wearing when she embraces Rey at the end? It was VERY prominently framed. It seems that I have seen this ring before (Amadala?). It seems to indicate some kind of duality like stuff (twins?). I have no way of screen capturing this scene, obviously, and have no intentions of discecting the waste of time known as the prequels. I think it is symbolic in some way. Thoughts?

Just watched it again.
1. I am almost positive that Luke is not Rey's father. Maz Kanata says something to the effect that "Those who you are waiting for, your family, they are not coming back but there is someone who will" which I believe referred to Luke being that person who would come back. 2. Kylo Ren was a badass Dark Jedi whenever he had his helmet on, when he was hiding. Whenever he took the helmet off he revealed his fears and his weakness. 3. Kylo Ren easily beat back Finn and then toyed with Rey in the woods to trap her. Once he cornered her against the chasm he tried to recruit her, which is why he didn't just try to kill her. Once she accepted her fate and embraced the force she found the power to beat back the unsure and afraid helmet-less Kylo Ren. 4. It is very possible that Supreme Leader Snoke is Darth Plagueis, the music that is being played in the Snoke scenes is almost identical to the music being played in Episode III when Palpatine is relating the Darth Plagueis story to Anakin, that deep opera humming song. The only thing that makes me think that maybe this is not the case is that he is only referred to as Supreme Leader and that when Kylo Ren needs a pep talk about the dark side he prays to Darth Vader instead of asking Snoke. I would think if Snoke was a Sith Lord and master that Kylo Ren would have consulted him instead to find instruction on how to become stronger in the force. I think Supreme Leader Snoke is a Dark Force holocron of Darth Plagueis which is why Kylo does not call him master. Plagueis was supposed to have discovered the secret to immortality. This does not mean though that he would have had to discover the secret to physical immortality, just his essence. Keep in mind that Yoda tells Obi Wan Kenobi that Qui Gon Jinn discovered the key to immortality but it turns out it is they essence that is saved. Creating a holocron is a big deal in the EU at least and is supposed to be super hard to do. I believe the steps to creating one was lost with Darth Bane if I remember right, maybe rediscovered by Darth Plagueis? |
|
It sounds like Luke had a Jedi school. Kylo was turned by something (my guess is a holocron of Plagueis) and then turned a core group of students. Kylo lead a rebellion against Luke and the other Jedi killing all of them (which you see in Rey's vision).
Luke losing his entire school to extremists decides to retreat to meditate on where he went wrong. Rey gives him his old lightsaber which he has not seen since Darth Vader cut off his hand in cloud city as a way to tell him it is time to come back and face the dark side. Being Luke's second lightsaber, I wonder if he will give it to Rey to train with until she makes her own or what? I also think Rey was a youngling from Luke's school who was smuggled away to hide her from Kylo. The odd thing though is that she was handed over to Unkar Plutt who does not seem to be a nice person. If whoever dropped her off cared for her I wouldn't think they would leave her with Unkar who would be just as willing to sell her into slavery. |

View Quote I'm thinking Luke or Han or both dropped her off. Han got swindled out of the Millenium Falcon while there, which would explain why it was with Unkar (which Han references as the guy who swindled him out of the Falcon) and Luke drops off the "thing" that holds the key to his whereabouts with that other dude on Jakku, before he too also takes off. Hiding the girl on Jakku keeps her off the radar until the Force leads her to the "key" that helps find Luke. |

The Mrs thinks Snoke is Luke.
One thing about Rey, C-3PO tells BB that R2 has been in sleep mode since Luke left. Why did he wake when Rey showed up? Did he sense a Skywalker? (Or did Luke have him waiting for her?) And Maz says the ones she was waiting for, her family, wasn't coming back. She never said her parents weren't coming back. Why? Does it matter? And, as someone who saw Ep. IV 5 times in the theater, I loved it. Hated seeing Han die. Hated it. But loved the show. |

None of the other movies have holographic communications so large and fine resolution as Snoke's was. So maybe it is a holocron and that's how Plagueis got around the secret of immortality... |

Going back and digging through the interviews of JJ, Arndt, and the actors I think I have a better grasp on what is going to happen.
JJ Abrams does not like the idea of midi-chlorians or bloodlines being a key to the force but says he will not contradict accepted canon. Michael Arndt who worked on the early script and essentially the movie outline supposedly heavily focused upon the offspring of Han, Leia, and...Luke Skywalker heavily with the parents being in a support role. They had a very hard time bringing in Luke without Luke overshadowing everyone else in the movie which is why he is only at the end of the movie. Arndt had to leave the project early on due to another project. JJ and the other writers then proceeded to take the best elements from Arndt's script and work them in where needed. JJ is a huge fan of surprises and stated, 'In that first movie, Luke wasn’t necessarily the son of Vader, he wasn’t necessarily the brother of Leia, but it was all possible. The Force Awakens has this incredible advantage, not just of a passionate fan base but also of a backstory that is familiar to a lot of people. JJ Abrahms." I strongly do not believe that Luke is Rey's father simply because it has been divulged as an early plot point and JJ has been a zealot about not revealing secrets. We know JJ does not like the idea of bloodlines and likes surprises. If they bring in Luke as the father he will take over the movie, which we know they do not want him to do, and no one will care about the main characters. Luke having a wife and kid could be a movie on it's own and we know that will not happen. |

One thing I really want to see for the upcoming movies: Stepping clear of the tropes already established in the original trilogy, unless they're secondary/tertiary to the stories.
TFA was a fine re-entry into the wonderful milieu that started in 1977; I don't mind them re-using these tropes for this film. But the next movies need to embrace new ideas. Otherwise the next movies will be no more valuable than the poor book and comic book writers in the late 70s and early 80s who had to take loose threads found in the original movies and stoke a story from them - with varying degrees of success. |
|
Watched it for the second time in IMAX 3D last night, just as good and I was able to watch in more detail.
The way Finn acted was awesomely to character.... his interaction with Phasma "who's in charge now, I'm in charge now" That was awesome characterization. When Han told him "that's not how the force works" that was awesome too, maybe my favorite moment in the movie. |
|
|
saw it last night with my family!
you shouldn't see it because |
|
I still want to believe that Rey is related to Luke or Leia somehow. The voice-over in one of the trailers about the force being strong in Lukes family seemed intentional, seeing as how Rey apparently is pretty strong with the force, but it was alsom very strong (but uncontrolled) with Kylo Ren.

Theory on Finn (not that it has to be)...
Click To View Spoiler Remember Sana Solo from the comic that caused a stir recently? Could Finn be their son? Not that it matters or anything, just a random thought. Han Solo doesn't have to be the only sperm donor in the galaxy, but he's a rogue who's out and about all the time, who knows? And iirc that comic story was done after the Disney purchase, so it is considered canon. |
