for all the nay sayers and haters The Force Awakens has crossed $600m domestically as of the 29th. it took Avatar 34 weeks to hit $750m. at this rate TFA will pass Avatar as the highest domestic grossing movie of all time.....in about another week.

think about that.

people LOVE this movie. I went on Saturday. movie had been out for a week and people were STILL showing up for the Saturday afternoon showings dressed as Chewbacca! some old lady walking in had a star wars shirt on.

lol yeah

but how many people go to avatar conventions or watch it a couple times a year.

making a shit load of money doesn't mean it has staying power.

Finally saw it tonight. The guy playing Finn was great. He seemed to channel a bit of young Luke Skywalker too.

Ok, just got back from seeing it the 3rd time, and I came away with a new theory on who is Snoke....
Wait for it....
Luke Skywalker is Snoke.

Concentrate your feelings and think about it.

-The Internet nearly broke with "where's Luke?"

-We waited the entire film to see Luke. A lot of fan complaints about that. Well, the joke is on us. We HAVE seen him already!

-much like Darth Sideous/Palpatine, Snoke /Luke is running both sides of the conflict

-Both charachters are hiding

-Fan theories ran amok with predictions ok Luke being Kylo-Ren. Perfect red Herring.

-Why does Snoke want to find Luke so bad than? He doesn't, he wants to draw out Ray any way he can.

-Who hid Ray on Jakku than? TBD.

-Kylo Ren is going to the Dark side not to be an apprentice but to destroy Luke and bring balance to the Force.

Killing his father, Han, to get there really was a great conflict for him. Kylo Ren (Ben) really will become the redeeming hero.

Mind Blown...

I finally was able to take my dad to see the movie this afternoon.  I've mentioned a few times here that my dad let my brother and I skip school and took us to see the original Star Wars on opening day in 1977 when I was 10 years old.  We went to the same location we went to back then (new theater building, same location).  It was awesome to get to see it with him (he's 87 now).

Anyway, I'm still digesting the movie, but my gut reaction is - THAT was Star Wars.

We loved it.

Yeah, I'm thinking you're off your nut.  It wasn't Oscar worthy, but it was well made, well acted and incredible visually.  The critics were just as positive about it as the fans and they aren't generally ga-ga about SFX.

to each his own, but this movie was just another reboot of a franchise that didn't need rebooted, and time will agree with me, once the afterglow dies down.

1.  No shit, which is why I made the statement it was "a reboot that didn't need rebooted."

Rey did a great job, and Finn too, although he had a hint of a poindexter accent I kept laughing at.  Boyega has been pretty cool with fans too, hanging out with fans when he could be somewhere else.

At the same time, of all the butthurt complaints I have read, not one has been about pacing.

JJ Abrams seems to know how to avoid that complaint, even art the expense of character development. Fortunately, that latter bit can always be worked in later, and it might work out better that way in the end.

FWIW, did anyone notice any lens flares?
View Quote

Pacing was too rushed, too busy, too tailored to ADHD modern cinema.  Movies years ago were able to tell stories without explosions.  You barely even heard the soundtrack throughout the movie.  Many of the space scenes were too cropped, too busy, too shaky and very unlike Star Wars.  You can see Star Wars Rebels as a great example of the camera work on what Star Wars space battles should be.

Lens flares were definitely present, in the first couple minutes of the movie with the assault on the town, as well as when Starkiller killed those planets.  Those are off the top of my head noticeable.  It wasn't nearly as bad as Star Trek, but there was no need for them to begin with.

Just read this today, it's a very good and funny breakdown of why a lot of the critiques of this movie are retarded or off-base. It's worth a read.

Such as...

Let’s take a look at these 40 "holes” and see just how hard I can plug them.

1. To blow up the 120-km "Death Star" in Star Wars, the rebels needed detailed plans for the base and a full-scale invasion force -- as well as the supernatural targeting skills of the most powerful Force-user in the galaxy.

Yes they did.  And in the Force Awakens, the hastily thrown together plan formulated by the Resistance to possibly, maybe cripple the Starkiller Base…FUCKING FAILS.  Poe Dameron and his squadron have pulled out and are actually leaving the planet when they see that the target they couldn’t even dent has been damaged from the inside.  They then turn around and manage one last, desperate run.  I don’t want to hit this too hard on the nose, but you would’ve noticed this had you actually watched the movie.

OK, that is the single best, most obvious example of post whoring I have read here in 9 year.

Just saw it tonight.  Went in with average expectations.  It actually ended up being really good.  After I left the theater I even thought more and more about how I really liked it.  It's like it continued to be good after it was over.

The complaints about Carrie Fishers acting were justified.  She bares no resemblance to Leia in looks or voice and her lines were bland.  They should have left her out.

Kylo's temper was funny.  He was a far better than Anakin's character.  The mask was a non-issue to me.  He's trying to be like Vader.

I liked the humor in it.  The characters were likeable.  The plot was fine.  Though im not sure why finding Luke had such significance.  Giant deadly space-stations is getting long in the tooth but still interesting enough.

One ridiculous scene in the movie that stood out was whem the X-Wings were dominating and then Kylo's ship, big and obvious has gone totally ignored and flies out of the battle easily.  That was silly.  Also, this is typical star wars, so not a serious complaint: it is silly that star destroyers turbolasers can't easily destroy the very things they're made to shoot.  It's be like Phalanx guns that couldn't hit a plane.  I know, i know, the script says miss, so they miss, it's ok.
Anyway, as a former star wars nerd, and hater of the prequals, this movie was pretty sweet.

saw it again today.  The fan service was nowhere near as distracting as it was the 1st time.  I think I actually got to enjoy the original parts of the story more with the excited-ness of seeing a SW movie at the theater out of the way.  I also was more impressed with the acting of the new people, esp Rey

It's funny, I liked it better the second time around as well. I was able to be more critical, knowing what would happen next - caught more lens flares, admittedly. I also saw it in light of this and the dozen or so other threads - all of which I had avoided before the first viewing.
