There's a guy with a channel that's basically just stuff getting covered in pahoehoe. Can of ravioli, a can of coke. An Iphone 7. A can of spam. A TV remote. It's stupid and fascinating at the same time. "This is retarded. Let me just watch the next one, with the can of pork and beans, and then I'll find something else." *half hour later* "Well, I bet the sword in pahoehoe is cool..." well they have video of the 12th fissure... it's pretty useless for actually seeing where it's located though.
https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/multimedia_uploads/multimediaFile-1972.mp4 https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html ""Monday, May 7, 2018, 5:59 PM HST Lower East Rift Zone Eruption The intermittent eruption of lava in the Leilani Estates subdivision in the lower East Rift Zone of Klauea Volcano continues. The location of activity today was focused on the southwest portion of the area. This morning, two new fissure segments broke ground. The first (fissure 11) opened in a forested southwest of Leilani Estates about 9:30 am and was active for only 3 hours. The second (fissure 12) opened about 12:20 between older fissures 10 and 11. By 3:15 pm, both new fissures were in active but the west end of fissure 10 was steaming heavily. Cracks on Highway 130 widened from 7 cm to 8 cm over the course of the day and additional cracks were found just west of the highway on trend with the eruptive fissures. "" So... at this time the active flows seem to have stopped but all the rifts are still out gassing and more cracks are forming. They haven't updated the flow maps and I haven't seen more than the 1 drone flight from this morning which I already linked in this thread to use to update my own flow map. The web cam of the area at night can't see anything unless it's glowing... And there are areas still glowing. The amount and intensity of earthquakes seems to have reduced but not stopped. Only time will tell whether this event will continue or abate. |

This is a Civil Defense Message for Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 10:00 AM. The East Rift Zone eruption in Leilani Subdivision continues. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory confirms volcanic activity has paused at all 12 fissures. Hazardous fumes continue to be released. Since the onset of this eruption, a total of 12 fissures have emerged. The lava has covered 104 acres and 35 structures have been destroyed. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html Summary: As of 7:00 am, the eruption along Klauea Volcano's lower East Rift Zone within the Leilani Estates subdivision has paused. Strong emission of gas continues from the fissure system that is now about 2.5 miles long. This pause is likely temporary and resumption of lava emission or additional fissure outbreaks are possible at any time. Deflationary tilt at the summit of the volcano continues and the lava lake level continues to drop. There is no active lava in the Puu area. Aftershocks from Friday's magnitude-6.9 earthquake continue and more are expected. Rockfalls into the Overlook vent within Halemaumau crater are producing intermittent ash emissions. Seismicity at Klauea's summit remains elevated. |

Yeah he's standing at what I would call the top of Leilani (he calls the bottom) his back is to Pohoiki and he's looking at Fissure 5(or 13) at the point where it crosses Leilani.

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/multimedia_uploads/multimediaFile-1982.mp4 https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html Tuesday, May 8, 2018, 11:18 PM HST Lower East Rift Zone Eruption The intermittent eruption of lava in Leilani Estates in the lower East Rift Zone of Klauea Volcano continues. Activity today was focused on the northeast portion of the fissure area; two new fissure segments (13 and 14) broke ground between fissures 7 and 6. Fissure 13 cut across Leilani Street. By 5:00 pm, fissures 13 and 14 were inactive; late this evening geologists reported loud jetting and booming sounds, and some spattering, at fissure 13. At about 6:00 p.m. reports of booming sounds were reported in the vicinity of Black Sands Beach Subdivision. When HVO geologists arrived soon after, no such sounds were occurring. Earlier this morning, geologists reported the widening of cracks of about 1 to 4 cm (0.4 to 1.6 in) of cracks on Highway 130 and Ali'ili road. Rates of seismicity changed little throughout the day, but increased during the fissure activity in the afternoon. Gas emissions remain elevated in the vicinity of fissures. HVO field crews successfully completed the installation of two new co-located seismometers and GPS receivers on the north and south sides of the East Rift Zone. Mahalo to landowners for allowing access and use of their property. HVO geologists will be in the area overnight to track and report to Hawaii County Civil Defense on the activity, and other scientists are tracking the volcano's overall activity 24/7 using various monitoring data streams. |

Is is pretty well accepted that magma from the crater is feeding lave tubes that lead to the erupting fissures or is this some other source related to the volcano? What is the difference in elevation from the crater to where the fissures are erupting?

The magma that normally feeds the 2 main lava lakes is being diverted. This is reducing the pressure in the system and thus the lava lakes are dropping. |

Latest:
"Scientists with the U.S Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said Wednesday that a steady lowering of the lava lake at Kilauea volcano’s Overlook crater within Halemaumau “has raised the potential for explosive eruptions” that could occur with little warning and hurl “ballistic blocks” of anywhere from a few pounds to a few tons in all directions of the summit in the coming weeks.“ "At this time, we cannot say with certainty that explosive activity will occur, how large the explosions could be, or how long such explosive activity could continue,” the observatory said in a statement. The observatory’s alert said that if the lava level drops to the level of the groundwater beneath the caldera, the mixture of water into the volcano’s conduit could cause steam-driven explosions that could send debris as much a mile beyond Halemaumau crater and the Kilauea summit, both of which are located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The observatory, which is located next to the Thomas A. Jagger Museum on the edge of Halemaumau Crater, also warned that such steam-driven explosions could send ash clouds to greater elevations than have been seen in the past week." there's some more eruptive activity East of fissure 6. To me it's just fissure 6 expanding... but they'll probably call it fissure 15. Pohoiki is probably cut now... I thought it was cut before but apparently people were hopping the large cracks... Now lava is probably spattering up out of those cracks.

Sorta yes ... sorta no. Everything's connected under the island. It seems apparent there were area's ... fractures/ tubes/ whatever that the lava (magma under ground) was not in... and then the earthquake happened opening up those areas to the pluming system that feeds the 2 main craters of Kilauea. So this area being lower than those craters and magma moving out from under them... the levels of those lava lakes naturally drops. Another way of putting it. The magma that normally feeds the 2 main lava lakes is being diverted. This is reducing the pressure in the system and thus the lava lakes are dropping. View Quote |

2:58 p.m. Governor David Ige announces two proclamations on Kilauea Volcano outbreak: 1. Giving the county & state authority to move out 55,000 gallons of Pentane, a highly flammable chemical that PGV has been slow to move out of the way of approaching lava. It would also have them take action to prevent geothermal wells from blowing out. 2. Requesting a presidential disaster declaration so federal funds and resources would be available for the current emergency or if large scale air & sea evacuations are needed. Interesting that the Pentane is still there... they were supposed to have moved it a day or two ago... |

- No really a existing network of lava tubes, Hawaii volcanoes are shield type and have the main craters and rift zones (faults). Lava from the main vent is always seeping/working its way through the faults and sometimes breaks through the surface. These houses are directly on the rift zone ( as evidenced by the numerous old rift craters around them). Big earthquake was most likely a result of the collapsing magma chamber of Pu?u ?O?o as magma emptied through the new vent View Quote |

There's not much happening at the surface in Leilani at the moment. Gas emissions
http://www.kitv.com/story/38109291/big-islands-kilauea-volcanic-eruption-destroys-two-homes 12:22 p.m. The following is the latest Civil Defense Update: As a precautionary measure, residents of Lower Puna, between Kapoho and Kalapana, are advised to be on the alert in the event of possible gas emissions and volcanic eruption. Because there may be little to no advance notice to evacuate, Civil Defense advises the public to be prepared to evacuate at short notice. They advise the public to take this time to prepare. For those choosing to evacuate voluntarily, be advised that the County evacuation shelters are located at the Pahoa Community Center or Kea'au Community Center. Food will be provided at the shelters. Accommodations for animals are also provided at the shelters. Pet owners are advised that they are responsible for their own pet's care. This is a precautionary message. The top priority for Civil Defense is for everyone in the Lower Puna area to be ready, and to remain safe. All beach parks in Lower Puna have been closed, including the Pohoiki Boat Ramp. |
