I recently purchased a bunch of ammo cans for additional storage as well as to replace some of the older rusted out cans. In addition I purchased a label maker. I'm not here to tell you what to do but using a label maker makes sense to mark your cans. I used to use the 3M blue tape and a sharpie.  It's all fancy and shit. That's how I spent my day.

I use an Epson label maker with yellow tape, much easier to read. I did the whole sharpie thing but if you have a bunch of cans it gets hard to read.

I paint the exterior of 50 cal cans in colors I can remember by caliber. Then write with a Sharpie on the sides what caliber and weight grain bullet.

Easy to move around, shift to the top of the can, or replace when the can is empty and I'm filling it up with something else.

I've always just left a scrap of paper captured under the latches and write on them. Scribble it out and rewrite to edit quantity when I get into one.

I dump a bunch of ammo in the cans then rip up one of the empty boxes. Tape the front of the box onto the ammo can.

Been using them on ammo cans for years.

I tried the magnet tape thing, but I take cans with me when I go and the magnets get lost.  Now, I just make new labels if something changes.

Duct tape with sharpie.

Green tape for "hold" ammo
Silver tape for range/blasting ammo

Eta: if factory ammo i also rip a piece of the factory box off and leave it inside. Reloads get a 3x5 card with all info detailed

I've tried a few things over the years.

I settled on attaching plastic sleeves to the ammo cans with double-sided Scotch tape.  I use plastic sleeves that fit standard 3x5 index cards.

This makes making updates and swapping things around easy.  Besides having the caliber written on the index cards, e card is numbered.  Those numbers correspond to my Excel spreadsheet for cross-referencing purposes.

Well now, we know who the ammo whore is now!

I’m so jealous, but that’s more than I could shoot in a lifetime. I know, I need to shoot more.

Good job on the stockpile/ammo fort. I like the label idea too.

These molded trays are worth their cost. They made stacking and organizing my 50 caliber cans so much easier. Like you I have nearly a pallet worth of cans.

I buy sheets of 1-inch adhesive letters/numbers at the hardware store, and they show up really well on the green ammo cans.

It's pretty simple.

.22
.38
.380
9MM
9MM MAK
.30 CARBINE
5.56
(etc.)

Reloaded ammo gets an "R" added:

9MM R
.223 R
(etc.)

Got a picture of the easy-to-read labels on the cans in my ammo locker, but can't find it.

I don't even bother. I organize cartridges by shelf. 9mm luger ammo goes on 9mm luger shelf. 5.56/.223 goes on the 5.56/.223 shelf.

I prefer to use a white paint marker, directly on the can. A little acetone removes it easily.
These cans also have some magnetic labels that I marked with the paint marker.

LOL, I was too. I remember when they came out with the woodgrain labels. I STILL have stuff around here with those woodgrain labels on it.

DYMO was the brand. I still have one around here somewhere.
