I would say what happened in Brussels will solidify Trumps base...it will cross party lines...our sovereignty is at stake.

As far as I'm concerned the Republican Party is dead. They are showing the country how in bed with each other they really are.

In all honesty, I can't see Trump being able to do very much once in office because "his own party" won't support him, even holding both the house and senate. They will gridlock him on virtually everything, and carry on sending their bills to him that do what they want, veto be damned. Electing him will be a strong rebuke of the GOP and the DNC, no doubt, but he will have to be actively supporting and pulling in his own candidates for the mid-terms to even have a shot at making anything happen, and that will be tough. When the entire legislative branch sets out to blockade the executive, it will be nasty. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

When the entire legislative branch sets out to blockade the executive, it will be nasty. You might be too young to remember this. When Reagan was elected, there was a lot of grumbling in the House and Senate about what he wanted to do. He gave a televised speech and outlined what he wanted to do. Then he went on to tell the people, if they thought this was a good idea, then they should call or write their congressmen and senators and let them know. It worked. |

Fire is our friend. A controlled burn is often used to clear out dead wood and choking brush before it becomes thick enough to present a serious fire threat to the old-growth forest it is clogging up. It's a trade of a minor, managed catastrophe for a later, devastating crown fire. This "controlled burn" through the GOPe is badly needed; the fuel load of worthless, strangling undergrowth has reached the point where we either need to burn it off or suffer the firestorm to come. Trump is not a "controlled burn". Trump is what happens when that controlled burn causes a forest fire. At this point I'm just hoping that the fire catches my enemies too. That remains to be seen. The only difference between a controlled burn vs. a raging wildfire is how it is managed. And I agree that putting Trump in office without also repairing the broken system of checks and balances is not a place we want to be. But Trump is the one - by putting the whole sordid mess on display and shrugging off political correctness like an irritating fly - who is provisioning us to do just that. |

You'll have shown the progressive movement that you can manipulate the Republican party into electing a liberal with literally nothing more than loud noises and booger jokes. It doesn't really matter. It's not like the Republicans aren't already electing, or at least trying to elect progressives, anyway. It will be a clear sign that there is no hope of ever electing anyone even remotely conservative, ever. We've finally reached the point where the bottom of the barrel of the Republican party has switched from grudgingly voting for people who support assault weapons bans to enthusiastically supporting them. It's a magical time. Trump has come out strong for things that Conservatives want done including the protecting the 2nd Amendment. Its not a "Trojan Trump" theory to say that the man is not a conservative. Nor is it a theory to say that he has liberal leanings But it is to assume he still harbors those beliefs and intends to unleash them on the unsuspecting public after assuming the office. I don't profess to agree with everything Trump says or does. I don't agree with what he's proposed so far for health care, for example. But I don't champion him as the cure for all our ills - just a foot in the door. Nevertheless, it's a very important foot in the door... without the kind of voter engagement his campaign is eliciting, the hope for any meaningful change in .gov S.O.P. is pretty slim. The details can be addressed when and if the need arises. So you are saying that it is unreasonable to doubt that a man like Trump suddenly woke up one morning around 2012-2013 and suddenly had this grand epiphany and became a steadfast conservative. That a lifetime of holding liberal positions on political issues was thrown out the window. EVERY ISSUE and ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Whatever he had for breakfast that morning, we should serve it at the breakfast buffet in Congress. We'll be on our road to recovery in no time I dunno, I don't claim to know what's been going on in Trump's mind the last ten years, and neither does anyone else except for Trump. But I don't really care... because I don't care who Trump was, I only care about who he is and who he will be in the future. His motives for promoting conservative ideology don't matter, as long as he does... and continues to do so as energetically as President as he has during the campaign. I believe he will, because I think he recognizes that as the winning path; getting elected to office only to unleash a firestorm of liberal dogma accomplishes nothing other than to win him a place as probably the most despised President of all time - a title I wager doesn't appear in his game plan. Cruz is struggling to even remain relevant, much less appear as a viable champion for painful, but badly needed political reform. I doubt a Cruz Presidency would have fared any better. |

Trump’s candidacy are preparing a 100-day campaign to deny him the presidential nomination, starting with an aggressive battle in Wisconsin’s April 5 primary and extending into the summer, with a delegate-by-delegate lobbying effort that would cast Mr. Trump as a calamitous choice for the general election. Recognizing that Mr. Trump has seized a formidable advantage in the race, they say that an effort to block him would rely on an array of desperation measures, the political equivalent of guerrilla fighting. There is no longer room for error or delay, the anti-Trump forces say, and without a flawlessly executed plan of attack, he could well become unstoppable. But should that effort falter, leading conservatives are prepared to field an independent candidate in the general election, to defend Republican principles and offer traditional conservatives an alternative to Mr. Trump’s hard-edged populism. They described their plans in interviews after Mr. Trump’s victories last Tuesday in Florida and three other states. View Quote So, I didn't know that the Wisconsin delegates belonged to Trump? No. Nobody claimed Reagan was corrupt, crass, and unqualified by both temperment and low morals as they very legitimately do with Trump. Reagan had a 20+ year record as a conservative spokesman and successful governor of California before running for President. Trump has none of that experience. Reagan could discuss nuclear arms issues at a high level, Trump isn't familiar with the term "nuclear triad". And so on... View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

This is like 1980 all over again. Does anyone remember Anderson? ETA: The GOP arguments against Reagan were virtually the same as they are against Trump. Trump is an idiot, and Hillary will clean his fucking clock in November. Having said all that, I'm voting for whoever is the Republican nominee, be it Trump, Cruz, Kasich, or anyone else. The important thing is to beat Hillary. But Trump can't do that. |

If the GOPs key takeaway from all this is 'we need to play fast and loose with the rules', then fuck the GOP. |

And won't that be fucking wonderful. Romney signed an AWB. Kasich signed THE AWB. Tell me again how the GOPe is going to be awesome? The GOP wasn't this enthusiastic about stopping Obama, either in elections or in 7 years of his shitty reign, so they can go Louima themselves if they think I am voting out of simple opposition anymore. |
