Me too. Used to read a bunch of the novels. But it seemed like halfway into the Horus Heresy series the quality went way down, while the size of the books (physical, not content) and prices inexplicably doubled. Seemed like my favorite writers disappeared, and the Black Library started publishing anyone with a word processor. For instance, does Abnett write anymore? What happened to the rest of the Eisenhorn/Ravenor books? Ghaunt's Ghosts? Graham McNeill still writing? Ciaphas Cain sequels? Dembski-Bowden? If things have gotten better, please let me know and recommend some books, because it's been several years since I read a new one. View Quote |

Gaunts Ghosts will never be finished.
Dan Abnett is George R.R. Martining us. |

Used to play in 3rd edition.
Every time I get the itch to play again I look at the prices ($65 for a tac squad these days? wtf?) and change my mind. Oh well. I still have some of my old armies in a box somewhere. |

I've built a few of the tanks and assorted models................never really played much

I think the lore is kind of cool. Though it became slightly less so after I realized the original core of it was a nerd's fantasy (Ultramarines) against jocks/cool kids (Orcs).

Okay, so back on the subject of lower cost methods.
GW recently changed the terms of their arrangements with independent stores, the independent stores are once again allowed to have GW stuff in an online shopping cart, with discounts. So, shops like the War Store have, for example, the Horus Heresy boxed games for $127.50, down from the full price of $150. Bear in mind, the $150 is still a big savings over buying the stuff (or equivalents) separately. Betrayal at Calth, for example, has three 10 man squads, fully equivalent to a Tactical Squad (Regular cost for a Mk IV squad, which is what you get in BaC, is $50, regular cost for a SM Tactical Squad is $40), 5 Cataphractii Terminators (Regularly $65), two HQ models (regularly $50 for the pair), and a Contemptor Dreadnought (regularly $60), so even at full price for the big box, the $150 is equivalent to the cost of buying the three Tac Squads at full price, and the Terminators, Dread, and characters are, compared to buying everything separately, "free". The "Get Started" boxes are generally a pretty good deal, too, although they lose their luster if you aren't starting an army, and you probably have (and don't need) much of what's in the box. Filling in missing stuff can be done reasonably via discounters, or you can score awesome deals on ebay, particularly if you're prepared to strip some of the more godawful paint jobs off (some dollar stores have a cleaning product called "LA's Totally Fantastic" which works great as an acrylic paint stripper, just leave the stuff in for a bit). |

A buddy of mine with an in with GW HQ in Memphis says they'll release the Blood Angels, DA, and Wolves codexes at the same time (or very close together) sometime before Christmas. I don't think they're likely to stop producing the various daemon primarchs, after all. Dorn makes sense to bring back to serve as a foil for and take yet another asswhipping from Perturabo (ref. Iron Cage, Terra) Magnus and Russ also make sense for similar reasons. Vulkan and the Sallys could serve as a foil for Mortarion and the Death Guard, since the Sallys love Humies and the Death Guard used to, before they decided they needed a krumpin' then decided they should resort to biological warfare, in reality forcing the Death Guard/Smurf meme is kinda dumb and lazy, because theres a lot more Legions with bad blood with Papa Smurf and the smurfettes than Morty, specifically the Alphas and Lorgar and his boys. Speaking of Lorgar: Poster Child for being 100% right and getting what you wanted, good, and hard. ETA: I personally wanna see even more WTF injected into the world and have it confirmed that a bunch of the chapters founded in the aftermath of the Heresy uses hybridized and even "Traitor" legion gene seed. C'mon dude, everyone knows the fucking Minotaurs and Space Sharks are the World Eaters, and the Bald Ravens are Thousand Sons or Word Bearers, just admit it and enjoy the existential angst. And before anyone doubts it, just remember the Exorcists and all the crazy shit the Inquisition is up to... its not a big stretch. |

I really enjoyed the game wayyy back in the days when it was essentially just a hardcover book, with all sorts of freewheeling "build your own army" rules. I remember when GW had official articles on how to turn things like an empty deodorant container into a grav tank.
Obviously over time GW has become far more focused on their business model, and the current incarnation that stresses all GW models all the time, plus is designed around any army having at least a couple of large, expensive models is no longer of interest to me. Not bashing anyone who enjoys playing under the modern rules, just not my cup of tea. |

Never played but always was fascinated by the story. I have a good number of the comics from back in the day. Kind of like Heavy Metal but set in a singular universe.

Nice, a productive morning.
20 more Scarab Occult terminators and two Vindicators basecoated in Thousand Sons Blue. I'm glad I finally got enough trial and error and experience with the airbrush to make it something that works well. When I previously was trying it with Tau, I was having a hell of a time, but now I've got a much better eye for the paint consistency (extra critical with a base color like TS Blue, that stuff is THICK), a better compressor, and better understanding of how acrylics behave on the tip of the brush, which led to me keeping it cleaner. Just four more Rubric squads to basecoat...and a Contemptor...and two regular dreads...Magnus...Ahriman...two Necrosphinxes to stand in for Maulerfiends...a Heldrake to convert...a Spartan to build... Oh. Back to overwhelmed. And a dozen armies after this one that need painting. |
|
I just bought the 30th Anniv. Primaris Intercessor vet sgt, another box of intercessors, and a box of hellblasters for my Blades of Vengeance (DA primaris successor chapter).
I still have two full regular tac squads, a sniper squad, a ravenwing bike squad, and a deathwing squad to do. Why do I do this to myself? |
