I get adding a rapper or two to the band, but wow, if nobody good auditioned maybe you don't have to have rappers this year.

I think the military could shave a lot of fat away, including 'bands' and music culture.

Don't know about "all", but all the premier DC bands, have auditions first.  Positions are advertised in the AFM (union) papers, no different than any other symphony gig.  If you win the audition and make height/weight, THEN you go to the recruiter as a formality to do all the paperwork.  Once basic is finished, there's no AIT.  You report directly to DC.  After a probationary two month period, your E4 status is bumped to E6.

Now, if you're enlisting and are like "I wanna be in the band" (all the other non-DC bands), then you have to go to their "band school" for AIT in VA for 10 weeks.  I don't know about the rank though.

How are they SSGs already?

I think all band people are automatically SSGs after they complete their AIT.

Regular Army musicians attend basic and AIT in Virginia, last I heard it was 6 months and they wouldn't let people test out, including Reservists and NG musicians going active. Premier bands come in at probationary E4 to E6 (not sure about all the branches), I believe (in the Army) that includes West Point and a few other bands. Most musicians come in at E3 or E4. WLC or whatever it's called now is/was MOS neutral and the following NCO schools are/were back at the SOM.

The President's Own, the top Marine band, doesn't go through boot camp, I think they have a short orientation, I think all the other branches go through basic or boot. Not sure about follow-up training (AIT for Army) for the other branches.

You may be right, but regular ole units are fucking ecstatic to see the band show up to play their ceremony. Like, 'holy shit, the band's here!!' from an E3 88M, it really builds them up. No comment on the rappers.

Army bands do deploy, sometimes in a non musical function. I knew an E6 who's unit shut down and he ended up working convoys for 11 months. NG bands also deploy, Reserve bands don't because no one wants to fund them- from a reserve band commander.

Sadly you need something for morale. Guys arent joining for the honor of serving their nation like they used to. This video game generation does what they have to as quick and shitty as possible to go back to their barracks and fuck off.

Not sure how long AIT is for regular Army.  These guys are attached to the Field Band, which is 10 weeks.  Yep.  President's Own is the only one exempt from basic.  Premier bands don't do AIT, just report straight to DC after basic

Lame ass bands in uniform aren’t a new thing.

Spec 7?!  I've heard legends, but never saw one outside of captivity.  From what I understand, they were such masters of the sham that even CW5's doubted they really existed.

My chemistry teacher in high school was a college graduate and drafted during Vietnam.  He went to the recruiter before his draft physical date and got Spec 5 for joining the medical forensic MOS. He was Spec 6 before he graduated basic and picked up Spec 7 in a year.  You never saw him because he was in the hospital basement in the lab.

He figured that if drafted he’d have been made an infantry lieutenant.  He really wasn’t the sort that would have made a good Lieutenant.

Those guys are very articulate and present themselves well. Hopefully they’ll encourage more kids coming out of high school to join, instead of going to college for their worthless degree in communications.
