People would rather tax payers spend $70,000-$130,000 per hour of flight for a less capable system, just due to nostalgia, versus lack of nostalgia at $10k/hr to operate.

Taxpayers would rather not fund terrorists that we later have to bomb at 10K an hour.

B-21 will be replacing both the B-1 and B-2. Both those aircraft are getting old. The B-1 saw hard use in the global war on terror.

They are also upgrading the B-52 fleet with new avionics and engines. So I suppose those things will just fly forever.

Nope this thing will probably do more work than F35 vs China.

We are going to be really tight on keeping air bases inside missile range of China operational.  Surface ships aren’t going to be in range to be launch platforms for cruise missiles until we can break the Chinese kill chains for their anti ship missiles.

So our strike potential is limited to. The sub fleet and whatever our aircraft can launch.  This will be a nice missile truck that even a single one likely will put more warheads on foreheads in a month than even a SSGN could.

I’d be very interested in seeing if they could fill the weapons bay with a long range air to air missile that could be guided by F35, drive or AEGIS to help clear swarms of Chinese fighters.

Current project costs are estimated based on ~100 aircraft with the last being delivered in ~10years.
They could always order more and some officials seem to indicate that might happen.

I gave it some thought a few years ago. It would be a whole new aircraft seeing as how practically all aspects of aircraft design have advanced considerably since the 70s. I envisioned something with a tri motor arrangement. 3 F-35 engines with the ability to throttle back the 2 side engines and use the center engine only to enhance loiter time.

Never did decide what kind of a wing would be used. Though I prefer fixed geometry over variable geometry from a maintenance perspective.

Some stealth considerations. But mostly oriented for speed. Armed with a variety of things and similar sensors to the F-35 only with much more computing power behind it. It would probably have a laser based close in defensive system. Though I'm not sure about the legality of those. I think that weapons that can blind people are something of a no no.

Loaded with air to air missiles like the Meteor with the aforementioned laser defense system it would probably qualify as an arsenal bird. Theoretically it could be used to stomp the shit out of a large force of relatively primitive aircraft in the air.

All this capability would be horrifyingly expensive of course. The human race probably won't be ready for something like this for at least a few decades, perhaps centuries.

No aircraft is putting warheads on foreheads…none.  It doesn’t matter how much you spend on it.

You aren’t defeating China with a manned aircraft as you can’t keep an airbase close enough to make it work and refueling in the air is visible IE killable.

The Pacific is a Navy fight where submarine launched weapons are the most viable delivery systems.

A hypersonic missile from a submarine is likely the only viable strike option.
