You typically want to hit a large drone or missile with something that can engage pretty far out as the laws of physics state that a large object travelling at a high rate of speed that gets slightly disrupted by frag is probably still coming....and is possibly now on fire. |

Throw in many weapons start end-game maneuvering (like the harpoons pop up, dive attack) at a certain distance from the target complicating the engagement problem |
