A couple of quick points: Agreed that Ukraine is fucked. For lots of reasons, none of which involve being pro- either combatant. Who would have thought Israel would have been attacked by a country? Anyone who remembers when Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and a few lesser players attacked them en masse and individually over more than a decade. You are right, I should have said in the last 20-30 years since US established itself as the premier/only superpower in the world. We will see how serious Israel is about striking back by what they do in Gaza over the next few weeks. They need to finish up there, because if they decide to hurt Iran in any meaningful way they will be fighting Hezbollah and don't need Hamas still capable on the other side of the country. Israel's tactical situation is shit right now and this is why i think they will be very restrained. Iran has boots on the ground on their borders (Hezbollah, Syria) and they don't. Again, the worst part is that Biden went out and said don't and they did. How do you think this plays in Taiwan? Iran didn't listen, why would China? Is Taiwan a closer ally than Israel? Is anybody? It's a fucked up situation. I am sure the news are going to be desperately trying to convince the world this was a great victory but color me skeptic. If I had to bet I'd say that the Biden administration made some kind of deal with Iran, along the lines of "do an attack to save face, we'll help shoot it down so Israel doesn't get hurt, and then we'll prevent Israel from retaliating". Or "This is what a downed Iranian ballistic missile looks like in the Dead Sea area" when placed there? The soil under the missile looks barely dislodged, as if the missile were lowered with a crane. If it fell from any height I would imagine more soil disruption. I am not on "X" so I have not read other comments. Not commentary on the conflict, just this image/comment. They hate the Iranian government. And they are hardcore 2A advocates. My boss told me a story before they fled. His family owned a textile business, he used to go with his dad to work and sometimes his dad would visit his customers and ask for payment for the textiles he had delivered but payment was late. One customer, in front of him, punched his dad in the face and made some crack about Jews and money. At the time he didn't understand why they couldn't go to the police. ETA: misread that. Thought he green lighted an Israeli retaliation. This was not Biden green lighting the attack. This was Biden or whoever they handed the phone to telling Iran the "rules" as the US saw them. Essentially, a verbal version of the system that Israel and Hezbollah have had in place since 2000. It's a basic agreement of what, how, and who can be attacked without an overwhelming counterstrike. The "rules" have worked surprisingly well, the only exceptions being the 2006 war and since Oct 2023. Link to a paper written for an Israeli think tank about the Israeli-Hezbollah "rules" in case you think I'm making it up. Duck-duck-go "Hezbollah IDF rules" for yourself to find even more. |

Defense of Israel Activities Update On April 13 and the morning of April 14, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces, supported by U.S. European Command destroyers, successfully engaged and destroyed more than 80 one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles (OWA UAV) and at least six ballistic missiles intended to strike Israel from Iran and Yemen. This includes a ballistic missile on its launcher vehicle and seven UAVs destroyed on the ground in Iranian-backed Houthi controlled areas of Yemen prior to their launch. Iran's continued unprecedented, malign, and reckless behavior endangers regional stability and the safety of U.S. and coalition forces. CENTCOM remains postured to support Israel’s defense against these dangerous actions by Iran. We will continue to work with all our regional partners to increase regional security. |

We also greenlit the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and then killed thousands of Iraqis when it turned out to have been a politically unpopular move.
