A little surprised but certainly OK with this. |

Very odd story if the allegations are to be believed as true. Why would someone simply wonder off his base in Afghanistan knowing full well the reputation of the Taliban concerning prisoners? View Quote Well, he did. And why would a gay, hacker-wannabee copy and handover secret war-related documents to whoever that other gay, hacker-wanabee was (I know, Julian Ass-ange)? Because they were both young, impressionable, disillusioned "soldiers" who didn't like conforming, being told what to do, following orders, etc. and had no business being in the armed forces, who realized they had fucked up by enlisting, and decided to get back at their "tormentor". And the ultimate irony is, data released by Manning (wikileaks) confirms Bergdahl deserted. And what exactly would the Taliban's reputation be? |

I see a presidential pardon on the horizon... How to negate Obama: convict Bergdahl on or after Jan 21st, 2017 I believe that the President can pardon a person for a particular crime before he has been convicted. That's essentially what Gerald Ford did for Nixon. Damn rare and maybe not legal. A moot point I suspect. Obama's gambit was to hope that nobody noticed that Bergdahl was a deserter and they bought the line of "bringing American's last POW of this war home". Now that Bergdahl has been formally charged, Obama is not going to risk any political capital or legacy for him no matter how much he might sympathize with Bergdahl's intentions. |

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will also be charged with misbehavior before the enemy, said the official, who was not authorized to discuss the announcement publicly on the record and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Bergdahl's attorney told Reuters that his client will be charged with desertion and misbehavior. A hearing is set for April 22 in San Antonio, Texas. View Quote |

Early whisperings are he will likely get an other than honorable discharge and his sentence will be time served for the time he spent with his captors. No jail time in the US and definitely not a firing squad.

Hillary Clinton: Bowe Bergdahl actions irrelevant
By LUCY MCCALMONT | 6/6/14 6:16 PM EDT Updated: 6/9/14 11:54 AM EDT
Hillary Clinton is defending the deal that freed Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, dismissing questions about how he fell into the hands of the Taliban as beside the point. “It doesn’t matter,” Clinton said in an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer that aired Friday. “We bring our people home.” The former secretary of state’s argument echoes that of President Barack Obama, who has come under fire for the prisoner swap that led to Bergdahl’s freedom amid questions about whether he may have abandoned his post and deserted or defected. The military is investigating. Clinton’s comments come as the former secretary of state begins to make the rounds ahead of the release of her latest memoir, “Hard Choices,” on Tuedsay. “I think this was a very hard choice, which is why I think my book is aptly named,” Clinton said, referring to the Bergdahl deal. “If you look at what the factors were going into the decision, of course there are competing interests and values. And one of our values is we bring everybody home off the battlefield the best we can. It doesn’t matter how they ended up in a prisoner of war situation.” The Daily Beast reported this week that when Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, she was skeptical of the possible deal with the Taliban and was pressing for strict conditions in any agreement. Do you have a feel for his politics? Will he softpedal it for obama or will he hammer Bergdahl? View Quote IMHO, if Gen Milley were left to his own diescretion, Bergdahl would be hammered into the dirt like a tent peg. I think, however, that there will be external influences to cause him to be more pragmatic. My bet is 5-10 yrs confinement, BCD. |

This isn't from any "official" source, but there is pressure to count the five years he spent in captivity as time served for any sentence he may get. |

Now, I've never been a Taliban prisoner or had a conversation with one, but I don't imagine it's like being a prisoner of the Germans in WW2 where you get care packages from the Red Cross. |

Same with 'time served' as it's hard to discern if his time served in captivity was indeed captivity or voluntary, harsh or not. |
