Quoted: I'd like to experience a quake, a small one. I'm just curious what it's like to see everything shake. I've been offshore in a boat 87 billion times but that's nothing in comparison View Quote We had a small one a few years back, a 3.6, the house moved like it was made of rubber or jello. It just kind of felt like it was swaying in a circle. Dog didn’t give any warning, it only lasted ~15 seconds. So have been in an earthquake and seen a tornado, I’m pretty good from here on out on wanting to be involved in natural disasters. |

Experienced them in CA. Was in a meeting in a conference room several floors up in Wichita, KS a few years back and we started getting shacking and bouncing. Never experienced a KS earthquake before. |

I moved to LA in the late 80's. We had just moved in, and were sleeping on a mattress/box springs on the floor with the head board leaning up against the wall.
One night, there was a little one - maybe 5 or so - out in the desert. Middle of the night. The headboard comes crashing down and hits me on the bridge of the nose. Got a deep cut. And, woke up in the middle of the night, under a head board, and thinking I had been abducted and buried alive or something. Bleeding. Wife sleeps thru the whole thing, and because she is on her side, no impact with head board for her. I assembled the bed the next day. |

The 1992 Landers quake, a 7.3, I was just north of Barstow. Massive trees were rocking, water sloshed out of the pool. Lots of cabins at Big Bear Lake lost chimneys. I was in the basement of the American Legion in Orange County CA when a good shaker came about. It shook again the next day at breakfast, lamps were rocking, pool water sloshed. Ridgecrest 7.1. I need to stay the fuck out of California. |

Maybe arfcom needs to go the way of yahoo and allow paying members to create posts and turn off replies to keep things civil. That way the creator of posts can control them. I was 17 miles from the Loma Prieta in 89, biggest one ( 6.9 ) I'd personally felt, many 5s and 4s living in the south bay for almost 30 years.
The smaller ones are interesting, you're not really sure if they are going to get bigger so you just kinda brace and wait. The LP quake was a pretty good thump right off the bat, had about a foot and a half of water slosh out of the pool. I hate to say it but the smaller ones are kinda fun. |

No fun as a kid! Southern California has not REALLY been tested since.. Yea we've had others comparable in size, but those hit in MUCH less populated areas, further away from metro areas.... I would assume we are much better prepared with advances in technology and buildings... however, that doesn't help older buildings that are ALL over Southern California. BUT, there is only one way to test and find out... and its not the optimal way to find out, unfortunately. |
