OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's economy shrank in the second quarter, its worst showing in seven years, hurt by a drop in exports and a disruption to oil production caused by wildfires in Alberta, though growth was seen as likely to rebound later this year. While the quarterly drop slightly exceeded market forecasts, economists were encouraged by other figures released on Wednesday that showed the economy resumed growing in June. They said the June pickup supports the Bank of Canada's view that growth will recover in the third quarter. The central bank is not expected to move off the sidelines at its meeting next week. [CA/POLL] "I think the Bank of Canada is still confident that exports will turn up and lead the economic expansion in the second half of the year," said Sal Guatieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets. Gross domestic product contracted at an annualized 1.6 percent rate in the second quarter, Statistics Canada said. That exceeded forecasts for a contraction of 1.5 percent and was the biggest annualized decline since the second quarter of 2009, when Canada was in a global credit crisis-induced recession. |

It's amazing, really. Normal rates of economic expansion used to be 2.5-3-4%. The US grew at 6.5% for several quarters after Reagan was elected, and 5% for multiple years thereafter. Now we're LUCKY if we get .5% or 1%. 1% growth in Canada would be heralded as an 'economic miracle' and everyone would pat Turdboy on the back and tell him to keep up the good work. We're all fucked. Europe and Japan will go first (Deutsche Bank is absolutely FUCKED right now), followed by Canada, followed by the US and everyone else thereafter. |

We have gone through some tough economic times here in Alberta for nearly 2 years now when the oil business started going down hill. It has had an effect on many businesses in all sectors of our economy and the Ft Mac fire didn't do much but fuel more doom and gloom for the negative armchair economists. The economy there was very depressed BEFORE the fire and the libs just pounced on a crisis to shuck blame and point fingers. It sure took away the focus of the big mistake that was made by Albertans last year by voting in the current NDP .gov who ran on the doom and gloom platform of the then collapsing economy that the writing was on the wall two full years ago. BUT. Alberta is resilient and has gone through this before. Folks have just gotten a jolt of self imposed conservatism and have tightened up on everything when it comes to spending, just as we did in the early 80's. The rest of the country follows suit usually within a year after Alberta hits the reset. And that will include dumping the assholes that duped the weak into voting for them. Including Trudeaux. |
