Group psychology and milgram experiment discussion aside, naked defiance of civil authority and chain of command by the security forces is something you want to be careful wishing for. Cattle Cars would justify it, but I'm not really sure confiscating fuel cans from a street blockade counts; even a blockade I agree with, like this one.

I've been to a bunch of similar things, and the reality is this is just the sort of predictable low-level fuckery you need to be aware of and prepare for. Instead of asking for defiance, understand the dynamics of the situation and put the cops in a position where the smarter choice is to exercise their discretion and leave you alone. One weird trick I've witnessed work in multiple places for multiple events is a cop asks a sizable group to do Y, a representative says "I'm sorry officer we can't do Y, we're going to do X" and then proceeds to peacefully do X, as long as X isn't something crazy or destructive they'll hem and haw and say ok you can X. It's not really so much a matter of physical intimidation or threat, more of making it easier for them to go along to get along because the alternative of pushing the issue has a likelihood of not being worth the cost.

Redditard Urbanite and shitlib politician screeching aside, no one understands better than the local police how this has been an incredibly peaceful event. They also understand better than anyone else how quickly the wheels can come off of this if things go wrong, and how they've got a potential powderkeg in the middle of their federal capital. There's also a good chance many of the cops their sympathize with the protest, so they're likely predisposed to give as much discretion as they can within the limits of their instructions. This is why we're also hearing accounts of some cops trying to take fuel, being politely but firmly told 'no' by a group of truckers, and them backing down without much complaint.

The #1 priority for cops at this point is keep things peaceful and prevent the downtown from being turned into a burnt-out cinder, they can apply some pressure to the truckers' logistics but many of their normal crowd control tactics simply don't work or are counterproductive for this scenario. Projectile-shitting urbanite cats are just an unfortunate cost of maintaining peace and avoiding the worst outcomes under the circumstances.

I don't know if the "contributing to mischief" charge is bullshit or not, but something that would probably work in this scenario is a hundred or so dudes carrying jerry cans and escorted by lawyers and friendly media. When cops try to stop them, the lawyers and media ambush them with lawtalk while the fuel porters keep on trucking. Again it's not so much about intimidation as it is give them an excuse to back down and cover so their boss doesn't scream at them for not doing their job.
