Barrel and receiver.

Personally I would order a tortort 80% Galil receiver and weaponmark etching kit for a galil.

Options are limited for receivers but these tortort receivers are perfect for these kits.

So where would you get a barrell and receiver, and how hard is it to piece together?

Does it require a gunsmith?

CNC warrior was making receivers awhile back. check the fall subforum under the Ak47 than at the top. Or go to their website.

Who makes the "how to video" on milling out the 80% receiver?

Does one just call green mountain to have a barrel made because I am not seeing them on their website.

Whoever runs Green Mountain must have had pictures of John Ashcroft with a dead hooker.  Their business had to have boomed after the barrel ban.

Just got off the phone with them, and they are running them right now.  Should be done within the next month, or two.

CNC Warrior complete receivers are also nearly $600+

So at this point you're getting into FAL territory

On the plus side they are stupid easy builds, no rivets except for the trigger guard (which can use screws if you need) and the barrel is threaded.

On a galil with a proper barrel you have to cut the extractor when you set the headspace.

The IMI barrel I had was virgin and builders prefer to work with a virgin barrel.

I've got a box of like 20 galil mags (including 50 rounders) bought for cheap years ago thinking they would work in a Valmet (they don't, at least not well). That's largely what is driving my interest.

Looks familiar - that one is mine.  I cleaned up the finishing marks you see in the pic (the Tortort comes nicely blued or black-ish heat treat color) - waiting to finish the build when I get time to do the barrel work with KG gunkote.

Everything fits on the receiver and the bolt slides and rotates great.  Tortort did a nice job.

The receiver came out great - used the scraps from the demil receiver as a template, childers guide and Tortort's diagram to locate holes.  I did the thumb selector slot with a dremel cut off wheel.  I Recommend  good quality cobalt drill bits and you won't have any problem drilling through the steel - its 42RC.
