I moved the boy and all of his stuff into a dorm at this weekend. There is a bathroom/shower between the two rooms and they don't lock.
I call maintenance and they send up some sophomore that says it's supposed to be that way. I call bullshit. Anyone with half a brain can see the pitfalls with that. Shady suitmate steals you blind and leaves by your front door. Shitbag dude waits till his girlfriend falls asleep and walks through the bathroom to rape the passed out coed next door. My son is in a private room and he heard his suitmate moving in after we left today and suitmate's mom calls him out for having weed in his backpack. Now I have to worry about this particular clown stashing weed in my kid's room if he gets caught holding on inspection day. I went to Lowe's last night and picked up a piece of strap and some aircraft cable and thimbles to make a noose around the doorknob so it can't be opened. The bar sits on some command hooks and holds the noose. If he gets caught I told him it's part of his Wiccan culture or some shit. I made up two sets so if they confiscate one he has another until I can make another couple. One of the clowns we talked to said everyone signs a, "Respect Pledge" saying you won't fuck with other people's shit and that would keep my kids shit safe. Would you expect some action from the school? I commuted to school and never lived in a dorm. Thanks |

My college dorm showers were six shower heads in one big room for the whole hall. Nobody died or got raped. No private toilets either.

Sounds scary. You should probably have just taken him back home.
|
|
For the one thousand plus a month he is paying to live in a tiny four hundred square foot dorm with no amenities, etc.
Why doesn't he just get an off campus apartment for less cost and more space? Freshman required to live on campus or stay with parents? Lie and sign the form. |
|
If it bothers you or him, stop by ACE or other h/w store and pick up a simple lock or blocking bar for his side.
Nothing's going to stop someone getting through an interior door if they want in, but the break-in will at least be evident, then. |

Now that I think about, I'm probably dead from the raping and weed planting. |

View Quote Were all the dorm rooms readily accessible from the showers? Or did you have doors that locked to the rooms? Asked and answered, I'd still expect a lockable door with the cost associated with everything college these days. Everything in that room will be expensive and easily stolen, and folks likely were less prone to steal when you went. |

The door swings into the bathroom so that won't work. What I put in place works but might piss off the school. |

View Quote See if you can buy a condo or small older house. I live in a college town, a 15 year mortgage on a 3br/2ba 1500sqft house is less than the rent on a 2br apartment in the 'student area' (anything not overpriced to get parents money is section 8 housing). Have your son live in it and rent a room or two out, will cost less and you can keep it as a rental when he graduates, let him buy it, or sell it. |

So... you put a noose in your kid’s dorm room?
You see where this is going right? |
|
We didn't even have door knobs on the doors to our room. Just push the door open, and walk on in. Heck, you didn't even have to do that - you could just look through the window to see if whoever it was you were looking for was in there; the doors were half glass.

In before OP’s son gets accused of lynching the mice in the bathroom.
ETA: and in before OP pays $30k+ for online schooling. |

Wood batten that spans both sides of the jamb with a notch cut in it to slip over door knob. Easy to put in place/remove and he can take it off for inspections. It won’t stop a determined intruder but, it keeps the relatively honest, honest. I’d use a good strong ply.

Another dorm had 4 separate bedrooms with a common area, but the individual bedroom doors didn't lock. OP is rather sheltered, methinks. |

When I was a freshman the most expensive things in my room were engineering textbooks.

Autistic sheltered parent is trying to create autistic sheltered son.
It'll be ok. |

When I was in college me and 3 other buddies realized the dorms were bullshit. So I started calling every property management company in town asking if they had a house that wasn’t renting due to aesthetics. Finally hit pay dirt with a house called the boars nest. Literally that was written on the mailbox. 3 car garage, 80’s funfetti casino carpet, saloon doors, in home bar, everyone got their own bedroom. And rent was only $240/Mo. that place existed like that for 12 years before the last dude moved out.
This is your answer. |

Every dorm ive been to had locks on the doors. Fuck that open door and signed agreement bullshit.

I'm glad I never had to live in the dorms even if I did commute from my parents for two years before getting an apartment. They were such shitholes I had buddies in them

Maybe let your son work out his own problems now that he's supposedly an adult?

We just moved our freshman in last weekend, and I went through the same thought process you are going through right now since we are in the same position. It's a CYA thing on the school because if the bathroom suite doors could be locked from the room side there's the potential that a student could get locked in the bathroom from both doors whether by accident or if his roommates/suite mates are assholes.
On the far end of the "what if" scenario this happens and the place burns down with kid trapped in bathroom with no exit. |
|
Whoever didn’t lock their doors in the freshman dorms got fucked with. Worst thing that happened to me was I found my bike in the showers.
The RA had all of his furniture removed once. One guy put granny porn on another guy’s computer screensaver. When he went downstairs to get his parents who were in town for the game. And they saw it. |
|
We had the same, plus I had a roommate. I kept my skeet gun in the bottom of my closet wrapped in a sleeping bag and never had an issue
