Quoted: I think hardly anyone actually pays for it. I think nearly everyone gets it with Frequent Flyer miles or their company paying for it because it's a long trip. I like it for long trips. If the seats recline enough to sleep they are a great benefit. Some Airlines like Qatar Airways have really nice free stuff- pricey wine and very nice pajamas I've taken home and still worn around the house in the winter as workout clothes. At the price airfare is now, 1st is triple in many cases so no I do not think it’s worth it. At least as 1st class exists on many carriers today. Free booze and a nicer seat and that’s about it, a long flight maybe.

Figure out what airline you want to support, get their credit card and make sure to hit their dollar cap and mileage cap. It opens all kinds of perks.
I recently booked a trip and they awarded my over 66K air miles for it, something to do with my card and status. That starts adding up fast and really helps with upgrades. This is a screen grab from my mileage account. Attached File |

Comfort Plus on Delta is a nice midway - slightly larger seat, free alcohol. And is generally available as a free upgrade.
Business/First class with the lay flat pod is the ONLY way to fly overseas Domestic First can be a nice upgrade depending on cost vs. flight time |

I flew stowage to Japan. 13 hours in a flying daycare sucked but I had that $1000 to spend there instead.

I’ve flown a lot of domestic first class and only paid for it a handful of times. It certainly can be worth it, especially on the longer flights or after a long day.
I usually will check the price difference and consider it based on my schedule and how full the flight might get. Best bought ticket was flying on March 14, 2020. |

Quoted: What's the cost difference between upgrading and just buying the 1st class ticket? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: Buy a mid tier seat, then upgrade immediately after. Saves hundreds of dollars. Yes. I only fly 1st. 1st on and 1st off makes it worth it alone. What's the cost difference between upgrading and just buying the 1st class ticket? @Kitulu I recently flew to San Diego from Minneapolis via Delta. Using that method, I saved $600 on the round trip ticket price. I paid $650 round trip for the mid-grade cabin seats. Immediately after booking that, go look at your "Upgrade" options. I was able to upgrade to 1st class for $240 for each leg. So my out of pocked cost was $1050. If I were to book 1st class right at first, I would have paid $1675 for the round trip cost. Now mind you I do have a Platinum Sky Miles Visa, and used to fly a lot, and I only fly Delta. I used to fly several times a week, and I learned this trick a long time ago and it has never failed me. And I have saved a TON of money. When you fly as often as I was, 1st class made it not suck so much. Here is how it works: Book a few weeks in advance. Very important, the closer you get the more 1st fills up, the more expensive it will get. Book the mid-grade seat(s) - NOT BASIC BARE BONES ECONOMY IN THE BACK OF THE PLANE Immediately after booking, look at your upgrade options Pay and upgrade to 1st Class Enjoy your pre-flight drink |

The United premium plus or whatever (step above economy) is worth the extra $50 for the leg room. The extra $1.2k for first class, I can buy a shit load more booze for that price when I land, than what I'd drink on the plane.

Quoted: OP, Delta offers a nice choice called Delta Premium. The seats are larger, more space between passengers, more leg room, they recline farther, have a footrest, larger TV screen with real headphones and the food service is upgraded, basically what they serve to the first-class passengers. I have tried it a few times now and really enjoy it. It is a nice compromise if you don't want to pay the price for first. My recent R&R trip to Greece cost me $3200 to fly over in first class and came back in Delta Premium. To do round trip in first was significantly higher, flying back in premium, there was no noticeable difference to me.
