Buddy of mine has a early 70s ranger with a 300 straight six. Windows are busted out but besides that looks complete. Said starter went out and parked it 10 years ago. Surprisingly the engine isn't seized and I can rotate it by hand. Looks like a fun project to clean up and these engines sound dead nuts reliable. Will try pull starting it when I get some free time. Cool looking engine.

Had an old Ford with that motor...bullet proof.
My buddy put one on his wood spliter and went for many years before he sold it...probably still running. They were salvaged and coveted for powering irrigation pumps down in potato country. |
|
The Ford 300 I6 was probably the best engine they ever made. Not very powerful or efficient but reliable and simple. I loved the one I had.

Buddy had one and we tried to kill it so he could V8 swap the truck, we literally had it redlined dumping gallons of water down its throat, we hydrolocked that fucker multiple times and each time it would fire back up and last I heard the truck was still running with the same motor about 10 years later

I think that engine is what they run in UPS trucks, almost bulletproof.

they are awesome.... I had an 80 Ranger with the 300 4speed... thing was unstoppable in granny.

Powernation can be cheesy but they did a ford 300 inline six just a few months ago.
Basic parts and n/a with a carb and it made 270 flywheel HP at 4300 & 338 ft-lbs at 3500 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSTxCfuhIAk I'd build one in a heartbeat . . . it's the 2nd coolest non-v8 Ford made. |

Yes please!
How about a straight 8? It is getting a full resto like the rest of pops' cars. Attached File |

I traded an old northern tool MIG welder I had collecting dust for a complete and running '52 263 buick inline 8. Slowly building a early 30s Miller/Duesenberg indy car for it like the Coker one. |

I THINK THATS FORDS ONLY ENGINE. everybody else made engines for ford. i have a fuel injected 300-6 in my plow truck. runs great. very dpendable.

I think the only way to kill a inline Ford 300 is to drain all the oil and water, drive it to the nearest pond, submerge it, and let it idle till it runs out of gas, and wait 10 years for it to rust up.
|
|
Yep. Damn good engine. I'd love to build an old ford truck with one
|

Years ago my friend drove an E250 or whatever van for his job with the 300. The company sent him a new van with the 460. Not any faster but it did burn much more fuel than the little six. The van never towed so poor decision.

Quoted: Chrysler made a slant 6 that was even more indestructible View Quote I watched a buddy change the oil in his old slant six Dart. He drove it up on ramps, drained the oil and swapped the filter. Then he fired it up and backed off the ramps to add the oil. Said it was up too high to add the oil when it was on the ramps so he always did that. It had so many miles on it the odo didn't work anymore so he had done that a bunch of times. Still ran and sounded fine lol. |

I want to like them but they're turds to drive. Bulletproof, though.

Loved that engine. Had one in an F150. Gas mileage sucked but NOTHING would kill that thing. I used it for a fishing truck and the frame rotted out from beach salt long before anything went wrong with the motor.

My 1976 F100 has a 300 I6 with a three on the tree. The engine and drivetrain are so reliable that I will never sell the truck.

I always wished they would have done a modern update of it. Aluminum head with intake and exhaust on separate sides of course it would need a turbo as well. Thing would be a tank.

I had never driven anything that was geared so low. What was great for me was I put 35's on and didn't have to regear. Think mine had the 208 which was geared lower than the 205 if I remember right. The truck was worn out when I got it but I got a few good years out of it and wish I could afford to restore one. |

I once assembled a 300 using nothing but a sandbox and an anvil.

Excellent engine. My dad bought one new in the early 80s. Kept it till a tree fell on it a couple years ago. Still worked fine minus being a bit hard to sit in on account of the squished cab.

Pretty sure those old 300's would run upside down if given the chance. They were damn good engines

I had a 72 comet with the straight 6. 250 or something around there. It was a bombproof boat anchor. Slow as molasses. Like 80hp at the flywheel.
|
|
I heard you could get 20mpg on those really slow 144ci straight 6 engines. Been hunting for one for a while now.

Dad had one in a '81 F150 with a four speed manual and limited slip in both axles. That truck was a beast and we did things with it on the farm that heavy duty trucks of the era weren't designed to do. Motor never gave up but the rest of the truck fell apart around it.

My father had a 64 Falcon with a straight 6................that thing was a tank, and ran like nobody's business

Purchased in 2012 for $2,700.00. 4.9 inline 6. My daily driver. My wife bought a Honda Civic new in 2012. My truck has been as reliable as her Honda. Great engine. Had 55,000 miles when I bought it and currently has 167,000 miles. Hope to get a few more years out of it. |

My 1990 F150 4WD had 251,000 miles on it when I traded it in on a new Fusion for my wife in 2010. Powertrain was all original from the water pump to the rear end.
My cousin has a 1992 F150 4WD with 341,000 miles on it (at the last report). He's hard on clutches and is on his 3rd, but the engine/transmission, etc. is all original. Saw you tube video where they took one and ran it up to almost 300 hp. No idea what it cost or what kind of mpg you'd get with all that power. |

I would love to have an early 70s Ford truck with the 300. I mean, I love my 72 with the 390, but there’s something special about the 300. Just a wonderful engine all around.
A highboy with the 300 would be a true apocalypse truck…and an awesome woods/fishin truck until then |

I had an 82 E150 Air Force van we got at a base auction, drove it until 93 when a cunt in a Subaru hit us head on. Loved the engine, would really like a fuel injected 300.

My grandfather's last truck was an early 90's f150 with a 300 i6. When he died it had 350k+ miles on it and had never had to do any work to the drivetrain. Routine maintenance only. Even as a kid I remember
how that truck impressed me. I'm not a Ford guy, but those were definitely legendary as far as reliability/longevity goes. |
