I woke up to a series of panicked text messages from a friend who's working in California. He left his Glock in a hotel room. He called them to ask if they found it. They did and they turned it into the police. He said he's not sure of the model, but it holds more than 10 rounds. I know, lawyer and all that, but he's pretty stressed over it, doesn't know what to do, and asked me to ask online since it's the weekend and the middle of the night for him.

What to do if you left illegal contraband in a hotel? Lol I hope he's no longer in California. Shut the fuck up and call a lawyer Monday
Only one thing he can do.
Pepper his Angus. Is he still in CA? I'd just switch hotels and everything if so. Hopefully they didn't turn in his name and all that as well. |
It's easier to ignore friends that do stupid things like that.
They’d have to argue in court that he physically possessed the illegal magazine or whatever the fuck they call it which might be difficult given what facts we know, but still, not smart and he may be in for some shit.
Calling and admitting to owning it was pretty stupid. He could have asked if they found anything in the room and said "Gun? I don't own a gun!" and maintained it must have been from a previous guest. Now he admitted to owning something illegal.
Make sure he doesn't fuck himself ever further by calling/talking to the police "to explain things." |

Tag for outcome/sentencing details and pics of his new jail-house tats.

Sounds like your friend is a real dumbass.
He doesn't even know the model of his firearm? |
Stupid is as stupid does. Hope he gets jail time over it.
At least some kid didn’t find it and shoot himself or someone else. |
Cheaper to act like it wasn't his and just buy another one when he is back in a free state.
I’d tell them it was a prank call and it was just some crazy coincidence that there actually was a gun in the random room number I asked about.
If he gets a call saying he won a boat and needs to come down to the police station to pick it up, I wouldn't believe them.
He is going to end up kissing it goodbye and if that is all that happens he should consider himself lucky.
How in the hell in this day and age can someone "Forget" his gun, especially in a state that has the restrictions that CA does. |
Since it was found in the hotel and turned into police by an employee of the hotel he doesn't have too much to worry about. Even if he's from a state with registration, any decent attorney should keep anything from happening.
He should still shit bricks, and call an attorney though. |

View Quote If he had kept his trap shut and played dumb, then I would agree. |

Where in CA? If San Fran he can just claim to be illegal, and claim his sanctuary.
What exactly does fopa protect? Traveling through states with these bs restrictive laws, unlike others here I hope he gets his legally owned gun back and california has to unfuck themselves because of this.
Eta, if you havent tought your kids about gun safety by the time they could be wondering unaccompanied through random hotel rooms your doing something wrong. |
Have to say your friend failed on so many levels handling this situation.
Have him call an attorney because I am sure at some point the police will run the serial number and attempt to contact the last known owner of th serial number, |
That's my nightmare scenario since I travel and fly a lot.
A few years ago I almost left home for the airport with my Glock 19 mag in my computer bag |
Why was he in California? Work or vacation?
Did he not know the gun laws in California? If he’s going to bring a gun, knowing the mazagine is illegal, why not carry it concealed to keep it from being discovered? |

Since that magazine is illegal in Cali, I probably would stfu about it. At this point they probably won’t charge him because they never saw him in possession of it. But if he calls up there wanting it back and claims he left it in the motel room then maybe they would pursue charges. Personally. I’d just STfU about it.

A lawyer getting involved with this is going to cost way more than the gun. He will still need a lawyer if they pursue him over it. I’d not say another word about it to anyone. |

At the minimum this is gonna cost him a bunch of time, money and a gun I bet.
Maximum, his butthole gets loosened up. |
Fail of that magnitude? Why do you call this guy a friend? Nobody needs that level of dumbassery in their life.

Your friend is a moron.
You are the company you keep. Time to sever ties. Doesn't know what model he has? Left his gun in the hotel after checking out? Might not have been legal to have it with him as configured in California? Good god op. |

Useable fingerprints on handguns are a movie and TV thing for the most part.

Well the Atf can probably track the gun back to him, the hotel was registered in his name, he did call, probably from a phone registered in his name that showed up on caller ID, to ask about the gun then used the same phone to text OP and admit his sins. View Quote |

Ideally, he'd be on his way out of the state right now.
If leaving meant losing his job, next best thing would be to immediately find a different hotel - preferably in a city served by a different police department. In the short term, the police will probably be too busy dealing with New Years drumks and disturbances to do much about it. |
