I really don't like camelbacks or similar bags. I'd prefer just a bag so I can carry a canteen/bottle.

It's supported there by the frame sheet in the pack and you'll have quick access to it via the large zipper across the top. You can probably even mount a spare mag pouch if the need develops. There are two dump pockets on the inside of the pack that are excellent for canteens or Nalgene bottles. They can be accessed by just opening the lid. It gives them a dedicated space separate from whatever other stuff you drag on your hike (such as a light jacket, etc) and makes it easy to stow them vertically when you're done without having to dig out a hole to slide them in. There's also a small pocket in the lid where you can throw snacks or a headlamp or boo boo kit. Avoid the urge to mount stuff to the molle on the outside and it'll stay slick and light. |

For something fairly small and super light, but with enough room for whatever you want to carry and several smaller compartments, i like the old OGIO Throttle.
I've been carrying mine for years on the bike and short hikes, super comfy and won't break the bank. Has a bladder pocket and an Ipod pocket, if that matters to you. The Ipod pocket fits my little PF9 in a holster and a spare mag.

Ditch the canteen and get a camelback style pack.
Or, what I do for day hikes: a tiny GoLite pack with a couple bottles of water and a FAK. Speed |

I use a camel Bak mule. A sds medic pouch on the back carriers my water filter and extras.
Carry four reloads...g17..3liter bladder..gloves...bandana ..sil tarp.ifak ..maps..compass. mora ...ti spirit..whistle ..h2o..spare cr123s..mini survival kit..25ft of 550..led chemical stick..bunch of small shit like insect juice...matches...BIC...firesteel. Bout 19 lbs iirc. I really need a bigger pack for day hikes but I've had this over 10 years...and has a few hundred miles and range days under it. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I just bought a Tactical Tailor Urban Operator Pack for work. US made and seems to be very good quality. The Urban Operator may be a little big for your needs but they have a smaller one, the Removable Operator Pack. Mil-Spec Monkey has a collaborated version of it that shows it with a CCW inside.

Mountainsmith Lumbar Pack is what you seek.
I can carry 2 Nalgene bottles, snacks, rain gear, and my pistol in a Bianchi holster with this rig and still have room to spare. Comfortable, tons of adjustment, rugged, great price.

I like my Maxpedition Sitka. Small enough to hold bottle of water and other small supplies, and a section for a camelback that is lined with Velcro in case you want conceal carry with it.

Get a camelbak mule. It is basically a mini backpack that holds water. Take out the bladder if you don't want to use it, but they are well made and durable bags.
