Quoted: @MarkNH A trained protection dog is a masterpiece and can do a whole lot, but it’s very common that they only act under command. When you have an bite-trained dog, you don’t want it making decisions on its own for the most part. Your wife would have to train with the dog on a regular basis (because that’s not just a “trained and done” skill set; it requires regular practice), and would need to be willing to pull the figurative trigger. And yes, your wife would have to be a regular participant in training if the dog is expected to obey her. She would have to set aside time each week to actively participate in training, even if you do the lion’s share of it. Absent that level of training, you’re looking at more instinctive protectors. They are more autonomous and need less actual direction, but are also less likely to actually bite and more likely to react to something you may not want them to react to. Both can be addressed via training, but bite training a more instinctual breed can cause issues because they will on occasion act autonomously and that can cause problems. With good socialization, they are usually able to do a great job distinguishing friend from foe, but there’s always the chance that they may not react well to a particular guest. It’s important to remember that without formal bite training and a will to persist in the face of opposition, most dogs won’t actually bite an intruder. They’ll bay them up and put on a very good show of things, but when push comes to shove, they won’t bite and sustain an attack. I hope that makes a little sense vis a vis choosing a trained dog vs an instinctual dog and what you can expect from them. View Quote Thanks SD. I have research and learning to do. |

But outside of a show, no one keeps them like that. People go out and get these dogs because the coat is beautiful and elegant, then find out that you can’t actually keep them like that at all. Not even show people keep them in that coat past when they’re showing, and outside of a show ring, it’s always wrapped up. So why have that be the “standard” coat to begin with? Why even bother if no one ever keeps them like that and it’s an impossible pain in the ass? [/rant] |

BDub was a good cat. She never caused any problems, was waterproof, and even though she had to go to the vet a couple times to be stitched up or have the blood balloon in her ear splattered all over the vet's office, she was great.
