You have done it, especially you guys who are knowledgeable about firearms. You see someone’s gun collection all laid out and you see nothing you like, and if offered one for free it would be trying to find the best horse in the glue factory.
Every single gun is one you would never buy, ever… Cheap, cheap, expensive but weird, hipoint, weird looking long barrels, oddball / strange caliber, ugly, accessories are all cheap, shitty or weird, too, worst is when they are super proud of said shit collection of turds. Just….  Attached File |

Yup. My standard advice for decades was, use what the cops and military are using. Glocks, Sigs, Berettas, Colts. They are not using Hipoints, Taurus, Daewoo and all the other shitty brands. So many times I have seen someone so proud of their dozen or more junk pistols. I am thinking to myself, instead of buying all that shit, you could have bought 2 new Glock 9mm's.

Most of the time. Cheap scopes in cheap mounts, poor maintenance, odd brands, etc.
If they would just sell the 30 shitty guns they have, they could have a really nice pistol, bolt rifle, AR, shotgun, and .22 rimfire, properly stocked and sighted to suit them. |

My brother in laws collection, he's got a lot of clapped out fudd trash. Last year he was all proud of his 9mm he bought. I asked to see it and out comes a Hi-Point. I immediately started laughing. He got all pissed off but I continued to make fun of his Hi-Point.
He does have one rifle I'd like to have, he's got an Arisaka with an intact mum. He won't sell it though. |

I feel sad when I see really bad magazines with otherwise good guns, or just the quantity of magazines that came with the gun, and no more.
I have a friend who is a great hunter and good shot, but just has 1 real Glock magazine, and 3 Promag magazines for his Glock. |

One of my friends asked me about a collection he was going to buy like that. It was pretty gross cheap bushnell/amazon optics, random mix master ARs and a god awful AK pistol with the original sig brace. I think he ended up kind of mad he passed it up because i talked him out of it.

I processed a huge collection that was several hundred guns. Plus some fishing stuff. Out of all of it there was maybe 2 handguns a shotgun and maybe a bolt gun id actually own. I was told I could pick one. Any one no matter the value. Granted some of the stuff was worth big money. I passed because A I felt like picking something for monetary value would be selfish and B I wanted the widow to get every penny possible.
Instead I bought all the penn international reels at fair market value. |

Sometimes, but everyone has to start somewhere. I’ve inherited probably three dozen guns that my grandad had put cheap (for the 1960s) scopes on and never oiled down. They mean quite a bit to me and I’m one at a time cleaning up and refitting with better optics, but I’m not buying a dozen quality scopes at one time until I’ve had time to see which ones warrant better glass. Sometimes the collections I don’t think much of are in the same boat. I always tell people they have a nice collection and unless something’s sketchy or they ask my opinion or advice, I’m genuinely happy for them if they’re proud of what they have.

My father in law has over 40 rifles all kimber bolt guns, every single one has a leupold 2x7 and is chambered in every caliber except. 3006, 308, 6.5 creed. Weird shit.

A friend inherited a lot of guns from his dad, who had apparently possessed the twin gifts of ignorance and bad taste. The Beretta 96D with the Tapco laser rusted to the trigger guard was the centerpiece of the collection, by far. I was unable to muster the least bit of interest in anything, and I would have taken only the Beretta as a gift, forget spending anything on it.

My father.
I understand milsurp collectors, clone builders, antique hunting gun collectors, and just people that want to accumulate vast amounts of cheap things like NEF shotguns. I "get" these things. It takes an especially sick individual though to intentionally build a collection around the Jennings, Bryco, Raven, and Jimenez pistols. When I see that pile of zinc alloy crap next to a SIG P210 it's like looking into a garage and seeing a '74 Lambo Countach next to a collection of AMC Gremlins.

Yes.
I actually don’t like it, but I’ve inherently became a little pretentious and disconnected from the realities of most gun owners. I’ve been incredibly blessed and fortunate to be able to handle and shoot some of the coolest firearms literally every single day. I will never look down on anyone because they can’t afford certain things, or buy cheap shit, but there are lots of awesome firearms that are absolutely amazing at lower price points. One of my favorite things is finding cheaper options that compete with all the Gucci shit people shill on the internet. It’s why the Ruger American is one of my favorite rifles. Especially when you get an actual shooter on one, and they fuck up a middle aged PSR with their nucleus and tangent theta. But there are a certain subset of collectors, who pride themselves in collecting large amounts of crap. It seems to be a very specific personality because they are always pretty similar. Usually they don’t shoot very much if at all. Tend to be fairly know it all. Not even very 2A, just seems like they needed a hobby and just happened to land on firearms. I don’t understand those people at all and usually have nothing in common with them. Yet I always get stuck talking to them at social events. I just keep my mouth shut and let them go on. But it’s painfully awkward as they thumb through their photos to show you their guns. That being said, everyone starts somewhere, and people come in at wildly different points. So I need to get over myself and check my ego. |

Meh…..I have a friend that collects cheap “Saturday Night Specials” They are pretty cool to look at and handle. He knows they’re junk guns but he likes the history. He has quality guns as well.

Yeah. Couple of times actually. One of my older sisters brother in law (they all lived 500 miles from me) found out I was a shooter. Competitive in some divisions. Was a huge skeet addict in my late 20’s and 30’s and am now concentrating on USPSA type shooting.
Anyway, this guy couldn’t wait to open his safe cabinet really) and show me his collection. They were all pretty junky. Norcin, junky Taurus, horrible cobbled together frankinAR’s, rusty 38’s…. All of it was bad and I wouldn’t wanted any of it even for free, but I gave him the respect every gun owner deserves and bullshitted shooting woodchucks and how painful it is to fire a slug from a 2 pound H&R break open open hammer shotgun. He was a nice enough guy and I guess just had different gun owner priorities than me or my friends believe in. It was good to talk to another owner tho.. |

Where I think it's an issue is when it's all cheap shit that there is no commonality or distinction with, other than the fact that they are firearms. I don’t try to judge. Some of my friends have way nicer guns than me. Some have interesting collections of history.
Most of them had a collection of stuff that kinda was plain mass market stuff Smith Sigma 9, Mossberg Maverick, PSA AR, 700 BDL with a Simmons. Just the basic but works stuff. The old timers I know will have just a few guns. Like a Browning Auto 5, Browning BAR, and a Smith 19. Great stuff from yesteryear. |
