It's a bird of prey, that's what they do.  Not sure I'm tracking here, why is the hawk on his back? Did you shoot the hawk?

You need to try to get blue jays to nest around your chicken coop.  Those mean fuckers kept the hawks and owls away from my grandpas coop.

Never seen a hawk act so....weird. Your chickens have the pox or something.

That video is amazing.  Sorry for your chicken, but damn that was cool.

I have a large Red tailed hawk that sits and watches my chickens in their coop almost every day.

FSA.

Anyone with more than one chicken didn't come by it honestly.  The hawk was just trying to get what he deserved.

I think you disturbed that hawk during his post-meal nap.

Srsly tho, why did it just lay there the whole time then fly off?  Does not compute, looked stunned.

I have heard about hawks "playing possum" (seriously) when they are cornered/flying is not a means of escape.  They will do exactly that, lay on their back with their talons up and basically play dead.  If you had stuck your hand down there.....bad things would have happened to your hand.

I had only read about it, I had never actually seen it - cool video.
Sorry about your chicken though.

I've never seen a bird play possum before. Too bad you can't use Mr 9mm to see if they're really dead, like you can with a real possum.

That was CRAZY!  Never new hawks had the instinct to play dead.  I wonder if that was more just a defensive position than actually playing dead.  He was doing a pretty good job of keeping the business end pointed your way.

Glad you helped get back on his feet, so to speak.

So this explains why I see hawks circling not far from my yard and birdfeeder but they keep their distance.  We have several blue jays who call our place home.

Thanks for the info.

Just watched the video. I guess birds can be retarded too.

Maybe he's part dog and was ashamed of what he'd done.

Really though the most logical explanation is the playing dead to ambush a would be attacker though.

Awesome video OP.  Beautiful land.  Don't listen to the haters.

From a Hawk/Owl rescue wesbite:

A stressed hawk will freeze and stare with mouth gaping and wings out, if capable. Owls can display stress in many ways including playing dead, snapping their beaks, hissing and fluffing up. Raptors can pant if stressed. Many scared raptors will show defense tactics such as lunging with their beaks or grabbing with their feet.

EDIT: From another site, example of "playing dead"

When the feds show up, get proof that the hawk was theirs. Then sue the shit out of them for damaging your property.
