I'm 24, but lets hypothetically say I have a 28 year old daughter who is hopelessly addicted to heroin, shoots up daily, pawns off my belongings, and is overall a burden on my life.
Short of them getting arrested, what could I do as the parent to get them clean, even if they are unwilling to do it themselves? |
|
Nothing.
You can't fix an addict until the addict wants to be fixed. My condolences. |

I would guess not much. I think too that in many case, tragically, Darwin does the work for us.

Arrested for stealing your stuff. Then hope that they want to get clean

start buying them monster energy and rock star energy. tell them to drink 10-20 cans a day and they wont have to use herione anymore.
trust me , it works. |

Of the addicts in my family, the only two to get clean did so because a year in jail for one, and the threat of a year in jail for the other. I kind of come from a line of addicts.
But truly overcoming it isn't just staying off of it, it's retraining the brain to look for comfort and emotional regulation in means OTHER than the drugs. |

Kratom might help with the physical addiction. 12 step recovery is the only effective cure for the actual disease.

If it were one of my brothers. . . . . well you could lock them in a room, chain them to a bed and provide 24/7 monitoring until they detox.
Down side is you could face serious legal repercussions and if they don't actually want to get clean they'd just go out and use again. Without knowing your situation I'd say try and kick them out of your life and the lives of all those you care about. They will do nothing but bring you down with them. Treat them as if they are dead and move on. |

Forcing someone to work towards hopes and aspiractions you hold for them is likely to end in disappointment.

Take your sister/wife on an extended vacation into the wilderness. Bring a camera and make a movie. It will write itself.

Have her get a "Do Not Resuscitate" tattoo. It'll work itself out.

IIRC member crashburnrepeat, who is a good dude IMHO, has dealt with this and could probably answer some questions from the parental role.

He may choose to respond or not, his choice. But I'd bet you will not get any more informed or better advice than from him. |

I'm in the shoes of someone who cares about their daughter and doesn't want to see her OD and die, although I'm going to extricate myself from their lives and stop supporting her and her POS man any further. Just wondering if it is possible to forcibly put someone into rehab or something. |

While archived I had not realized that was TEAM thread. Deleted link for that reason. Sorry OP.

1st post!
Even if you were able to clean her up nothing will prevent her from starting up again. |

If the addict wants to quit you can do a lot to help
If they are not ready to accept help you can’t do anything but make sure you are making life as hard as possible for them. Getting locked up in county jail can be the best thing for them sometimes. Shielding an addict from The consequences of their actions just feeds the addiction. If they are ready Vivitrol can really help. It is basically 30 day release narcan shots - keeps them from feeling the high and acts like a safety net. Be careful - most addicts can make it 30 days or so then they relapse and OD because they have reset their tolerance. |

What many here fail to understand for addicts is that they become physically dependent on the drug. Meaning they are forced to take it or the withdrawal symptoms come creeping up and can feel like the worst flu ever and also a sheer mental anguish and depression that forces to body to seek out the drug because it now “needs it”
This is what forces many to crime once they go broke buying the drug Most aren’t even doing it to feel high anymore, they do it to feel normal |
|
The recovery rate for heroin addicts is very small even among those that want to get clean.

Nothing short of locking them in their basement and denying them any outside contact. Cold turkey but even once the system is cleared, they'll find the sh*t on the street and start fresh. It is not legal to do this since it would be false imprisonment. The person is an adult and not a minor under the control of their parent.

Coming from the ex user side of things the only thing you can do is not help her use and wait till she makes the choice and when she does be there for her and it'll take a couple trys if she wanting to do it, Just had a friend kick last July and hasn't used it since , she came off a 10 yr run and doing great, nice to see a side of her I hadn't before
Another is getting closer been a hard last 15 months with her been to 2 detoxes but 5 hr later was getting slammed again but she is getting close , I'm the only person to see her not high on H in 7 years be it a very short time but she will get there in the next several months I'm sure One thing that can help if she's getting a mind set that she wants to quite is getting het to snort or foil it, but to some the needle & spoon are part of it |

Suboxone. Same treatment as methadone, but far superior as a program and instead of getting you just as high like methadone does, Suboxone only keeps them from going into withdrawal. Its something they can live a productive life on until they got off of, unlike heroin or methadone.
