Long story short...I filled up the 5gal "utility lug" that I use for my 2-stroke dirtbike several weeks ago. I always make it a habit to mix in the oil as soon as I get home from the gas station, before I put the tank in the shop next to my bike.
For some reason...I'm starting to second guess myself, thinking that maybe I didn't mix in the oil this time? I've never done that in 20+ years or riding, but for some reason...I'm not 100% sure I did. I run Maxima Castor 927 oil, which unfortunately is a light gold color....and doesn't change the color of the fuel at all. I mix at a 40:1 ratio. I don't want to roll the dice and risk burning up my RM250 motor.....what's the easiest way to tell if I mixed oil in the fuel? Can I take a small spoonful and try to light it, see if it smokes? Can I try running my mower on it and see if it smokes at all vs. regular gas Any suggestions would be great!! I need to swtich to a different oil, something that changes the color of the fuel...... |

Put more oil in because 20:1 isn't as bad as 0:1
Or put it all in your truck and start over |

Color.
Most two stroke oils are dyed and will tint the fuel that color. Edit: Even light gold will tint. Take a sample in a clear container like a glass jar. Hold it to a white piece of paper with light. |

Color and smell. I did have a color blind friend that I watched dip his finger in an atf puddle under a truck and taste it to see what it was. He also died too young though.
|

Shake it up and give it a good long sniff multiple times.
Seriously, you should be able to smell it or do the jar thing suggested above. |
|
Have an old push mower laying around? Run the gas out of it and put a bit in and see if the exhaust makes any smoke or smells like 2 stroke burning. Make sure to dump whatever is left after testing out and put some fresh gas through the mower.
|
|
I would feed it into your truck over a couple tanks of gas and start over. I put mix in my vehicles all the time when I need to clear a can.
|
|
Make a habit of adding your fuel additives to the can BEFORE filling it with fuel, which will also ensure more thorough mixing.
|
|
dip finger and rub together, feel oily?
Put a couple drops on a piece of paper, let the gas evaporate, is there dye/oil left on the paper? I like the lucas 2s oil that's blue. There's no question when it's mixed. |
|
Run it in your lawnmower for an hour. If you didn’t forget to mix you will be rewarded with a thick blue/white plume of indicator smoke

Klotz doesn’t die fuel as much as others but boy does the smell make my Johnson hard.

The lack of dye is actually the reason I switched from 927 to Formula K2. My kids have gotten to the age where they are allowed to ride without me home as long as Mom is outside with them. The lack of dye had me worried someone would make a mistake.
If you put a straight gas can next to the mixed gas you should be able to tell that the mixed gas is a little darker. Personally I don’t think it’s worth the risk to save yourself $15. I’d either dump it or use it in the lawn mower. |
|
If you are comfortable with judging color, do that. If not, just run it through your truck. If you already have 10 or more gallons in it, it will be really reduced. I have done it a few times with last years boat gas. Never had it show a code or anything.

Quoted: Not sure the bike would stay running very long at 20:1 without fouling the hell out of the plug. View Quote Changing the plug is a lot cheaper than locking up the motor. From a cost standpoint, if in doubt I'd add more oil or just dump the gas and get new. The price of 5 gal of gas is nothing compared to rebuilding the motor. |

I would probably avoid running 2 stroke mix through a modern vehicle. If it doesn't have a cat or 02 sensors I wouldn't be concerned.

If the color test isn't obvious, dump it down a storm drain and start over.
Not worth ruining something over $15. |

The color will tell you but I’ll tell you the same thing I always tell my boys; always put your oil in first, then fill up the can.

Quoted: I thought that even small amounts of 2-stroke oil wasn't good on O2 sensors or cat convertors? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: this dump in car/truck and start over in can. it wont hurt your car, I do it all the time with any 2 stroke gas more than a month or 2 old. I thought that even small amounts of 2-stroke oil wasn't good on O2 sensors or cat convertors? I've dumped tons of 2 stroke gas and old lawnmower gas in my cars for years. By the time you mix a couple gallons in 15-20 gallons in your car it amounts to nothing. |

The whole "it will mess up your truck's sensors" is news to me, after every fishing trip I dump the leftover 50-1 mix in the tank for the drive home.

Put in more oil. If it won't run in your bike because it is double oil, them just add more gas.
|

i did the same thing on saturday. I dumped it in the generator and got new gas. I just rebuilt the engine on wifes ATV. Not risking it over a $10

Quoted: Quoted: Put more oil in because 20:1 isn't as bad as 0:1 Or put it all in your truck and start over I mix at 40:1....not 20:1 If you add the correct amount of oil to the container of gas you don't know has oil in it, no harm should come to your equipment or person. In one case, the gas-oil mix is correct; in the other, the gas-oil mixture will be 2x, but as already said 20:1 gas:oil beats 20:0. |

I always leave some gas in my outboard tank,
then put in the correct amount of oil for the gallons I'm going to buy and shake it around. Then go to the gas station. Am I doing it wrong? |

View Quote How much do you think the fine is if you get caught dumping gasoline in a storm drain? Beyond that, do you ever fish? Because someone downstream of you does and they probably eat the fish. Far far better to run that gas in a riding lawnmower or use it to burn leaves or brush then to contaminate the waterways with it. |

You shouldn’t even have to hold it up to your nose. Put your mask back on, Karen. |
