Roam and grab unless there's a specific ingredient or two I want for a special recipe. Like a spice, or a cut of meat.

List for things I must get that i don't get all the time. Keep a note pad on fridge for that...like aluminum foil, sesame seeds, random shit...
No produce, cheese, meat, etc gets written down. I just walk around and get what I need. Plan meals on the fly and always get certain items...bananas, strawberries, apples oranges onions etc. |
I get specific things needed and stock up on things with a great sale price. |
Best of both.
Wife and I keep a list on the counter and add to it all week. When one of us gets some free time we will go shopping. Both work long hours so we tend to eat out several times a week. We both buy the list but roam the aisles. Meat and produce purchases are more sour of the moment based on quality. |
We list the things. When something grabs my attention, I'll usually add it to the list just so I can refer to it the following week(s).

List, but stay alert for bargains and make changes as appropriate.
Some stores have a "special" display for items near their expiration dates. These items can be taken home and immediately frozen for substantial savings. Last week I loaded up on a bunch of thighs and drumsticks for $0.99/#. |
Day to day I wing it. If I'm making something that requires a recipe I make a list.

Browse instacart for 5-10 minutes then get back to my life. An hour or two later food is magically at my door

Here are my steps. 90% of the time it works every time.
-Make a list -Forget list at home but don't realize it until I get to the store. -Call wife. No answer. -Begin collecting items off memory. -Call wife. No answer. -Confidently finish shopping thinking I got everything. -Call wife to confirm. No answer. -Checkout/go home. -Realize I forgot several things once I see list. -Go without missing items until next week. |
My wife makes a list and follows it. I fill in with grab and go.

Always a list. I did buy a jar of Planters peanuts on sale for $3 that I happened to see.

My pattern -
Cold cuts from the deli Freshies (fruit and veggies) Chicken Steak Ham Cereal Chips Bread Milk Yogurt Cheese Frozen food Don't need a list. |
I have a list on my phone of stuff I am out of but also buy things I see on sale or want to try. If I did not have a list I'm sure I would forget something every time.
List to make sure I get the things I need and just grab anything else that catches my eye.

Quoted: Check the ads for deals , then cherry pick . Plus the wife always knows which stores have the best normal day prices on items . We shop , HyVee , Jewel , Fairway , Target , Super wallyworld , Fresh Thyme and Sams . View Quote This I do a quick perusal of all the sales ads on Wednesday. I list everything that we regularly use or might want to try that is on sale. Takes 15 - 30 minutes/week and saves us quite a bit on groceries. We usually end up getting 90-95% of our groceries on sale. We are lucky to have Publix, Winn Dixie & Harris Teeters within 4 miles of our house. Super Walmart & Aldi is less than 10 miles. |
List then it becomes roam and grab. Which is all snacks and shit
Both.
Most of the time I’m stopping to just grab a few things. Then I’ll skim through the aisles to see if and looks good. Then I’ll see how long the lines are and often then buy beer or whiskey so I can use the checkout in the liquor dept without waiting in line. |
I don’t anymore. Wife does. When I did, I knew basically what I was getting and was on a mission to get in and out asap. I only went very early and that was back when some where 24/7. Grocery stores are filled with women who act like they have all the time in the world and no one else is there for anything.
A little of both.
I have a list, but there is always something that I forget to put on it. |
A little from column A, a little from column B.
No really without a list I will often get no where near enough food to last a week or two. Rarely will buy way too much. I hate grocery shopping as well. I'd gladly pay someone to do it. Not like buy online and pickup but do the whole thing, planning meals and deciding what to buy, etc. |
Online. Point and click. Wait for purple hair fatty to load in trunk.
Don't overthink it, just go in the door.
College gals in yoga pants on aisle 3, means you need some shit on aisle 3. |
A list in my head otherwise I would not be going, but I usually forget something. I tried writing a list once then walked off and left it at home. I suppose I could write it on my phone but I'd probably forget to look at it.
Both of the grocery stores where I shop are relatively close to home so I can go back the next day if I forget something important. And I try not to go when I am hungry, because I will end up buying stuff I really do not need. |
List on my phone in an app called Our Groceries. It's been an absolute game changer because multiple phones can share the same account/lists, so the wife and I can add stuff to the list and the lists will be synced in real-time. It comes in handy when one is shopping and the other remembers something they need.
That said, I still end up splurging because I'm usually shopping on an empty stomach |
I keep a list in my phone on an app called Any List. I add things to the shopping list throughout the week, and then check them off as I grab them in the store.
That's also where I keep my Short Term ToDo List, my Long Term ToDo List, restaurants I want to try, my list of stuff I want to buy, etc. You can also share the lists between people. |
List with flexibility because half the sale items are not even in stock half the time.
I make my list on excel in my phone. Sort it in "aisle" order before going to store. My checkoff is putting in the price. Also has a tax calculation. I know right away what its going to cost before going through checkout. I have caught them double scanning items many times.
Used to be a grabber and did well.
But since my hair started turning, my memory isn't what it used to be, so I make a rough list. |
If I'm going shopping - grocery, Walmart, home improvement - I have a list.
When I get there, I may get additional things I want at the moment or something I had just remembered, but I've learned I can count on just my memory when going shopping. I've had a list, gone shopping, and then realized, when I got home, that I forgot to go to one of the stores for which I had items on my list. Yes, I'm a boomer. I am going shopping, so I'm making a list today. |
1. Plan a menu for the week
2. Inventory shelf/fridge stock 3. Build shopping list 4. Shop the list Steps 1 and 2 often happen simultaneously, especially now that my 13-yr is no longer vegan. He often buys meats and seafood when he's out with mom, with no plan for integrating the items into a meal. So, I'll inventory the proteins, and build them into my menu for the week. Meat is too damned expensive for his little late-night, solo snacking experiments. |

I make a mental list, and usually forget something or add things I see that I didn't remember to add. I also do a lot of curbside pickup. Much easier.
