The wash out question got me to thinking. In my company (basic-roughly 200) there were 7 guys to do both. About 3.5%. How did you fare?
Sharpshooter with rifle, expert with grenades. And I nailed all the 350s. It was the 100s that had all the holes and wouldn't fall.
Never had a problem after that with getting expert. |
expert on grenade? i thought it was like horse shoes where "almost" still counts.
Expert Rifle and Grenade out of basic. ETA: As I remember there were many others in my training company to achieve this too. |
I know I skipped a couple of 250's to get the 300's(they had a star on the head). |
can someone please esplain the nuances of the grenade ranking?
I was one of four in our training company to get both Expert on Rifle and Grenade.
C 1/50th, Sand Hill, Ft. Benning, GA, 1988. |
It's been almost 20 years for me , all I can remember is you have to get it within a certain ring / number of times.Ours was on a running course with objectives set up along the way. |

Delta 1/46 Ft. Knox Ky , 1990. 1 out 7 . |

WHAT????? You actually had to qualify with grenades???
What you pull the pin and if you are able to toss it without blowing yourself up you qualify? Marines don't "qualify" with grenades we throw them! |
Same. |
Hahahaha D Co 1/50th here! 1999 though |
X-Pert Rifle and Grenade
Plus X-Pert MG, Pistol, Mortar and M203 when I got to permanent party. Can't wear them all according to regs. Of course pistol is a gimme, just have to hit the plastic silhouette, not just the 10 ring. |
Rifle Expert 2nd award. I only got to qual in the fleet once, but both times were expert so Im happy.
Expert Rifle & Grenade at the Benning School for Boys' Infantry OSUT....
hahahaa i was thinking the same thing.. i remember throwing shit loads of blue dummies and only a handfull of live grenades .. but hey.. they get a pretty ribbon :) .. or is it a shiney medal? edit: Army guys in boot camp how many live grenades did yall throw? for us in 94 i think it was less the 5 live ones.. but that was only boot camp and of course 100s of dummied... thats a question i never thaught of asking before |
It was "rationed " down when I came through , on everything but m-16, m-60 , and grenades it was all training rounds.Even the tracers were reduced to every 5th rd because of drought. The DI's almost sounded apologetic. |
I have never even heard of such a thing with the grenade qual. Sounds interesting, though. I have shot on the Army course of fire a few times at Ft Stewart but I don't know the score. On the USMC rifle range at PI I got 2 markmans and an expert.
Yep. Both. But then I went into Prestige Mode and had to start all over again.
We were range cadre for a grenade range for some REMF's. Well the company didn't show up and we already took the 150 grenades out of the cases. So about 10 of us got rid of the grenades. I threw at least 20 grenades that day. Good fun!
I was Army , about 5 live ones.Brings up fond memories of the blast wall and the fox hole. |
Nope Marines just throw them.
I never really thought that to qualify with a grenade you needed to do something more than not blow yourself up. But I guess they had to say that you have to qualify so you can get the pretty little ribbon for it. |
correct.. in boot camp.. Marines are expected to be able to throw a grenade its not that it wasnt addressed.. we just didbt get fliar to add on our uniforms for basic stuff |
I tend to give Marines my utmost respect , don't get me wrong. - You all are the first responders of the military. |

I will admit that I only scored marksman on my rifle qualification, I shot sharpshooter during practice, yes I choked. But I did qualify expert with grenades. That was 16 years ago, so I've had a lot of practice with my rifles since then.
Rifle, Pistol, and Grenade... Expert.
I must have thrown a million of those little blue bastards, only to get to throw 5 live ones. Anyone else remmember the wheird whistle/wopwopwopwop noise they used to make when you threw them?. |
That reminds me of the limp wristed guy from California that had the chalk mark of death on his helmet.Every time he would go to throw the grenade it would roll out of his hand backwards. The DI's had a fit with him.He never did qualify. |

I gained a good shooting reputation from the beginning of BRM in Basic, few in my company spent much time shooting before joining the Army. During the first two days, I had drill sergeants ask me if I spent a lot of time in clock towers. I was shooting tight cloverleafs from the start when we were grouping and zeroing while most people had a shotgun pattern.
Then the day we qualified I ended up having a bad day (bad lane too IMO). I didn't even qualify the first time. Second time they put me on the same lane and didn't qualify again. Third time they put me on a different lane and I got a 35, Sharpshooter. As for grenades, they were rationing them so we each threw one live grenade. I don't really remember what or how the qualification worked. Some people put an expert grenade badge on their Class A's. I never bothered. |
I got expert rifleman, but apparently I throw grenades like a girl. I did not qualify the first two times through and had to go back with another company. But at least I got to throw two more live grenades that day.
The army grenade qual course had target areas you had to toss grenades into. I remember the pill box and having to toss one into a ditch around some Ivan targets. You had to do the pre-engagement ritual and throw it fairly accurately. I never wore a grenade badge. |
Hey, you only missed it by one.It was always a source of pride for me because I had been a disappointment to my family until I joined the service and I told my dad that I would get expert. ETA- because my dad taught me to shoot and passed ball with me. |
Both. Always shot 40 with an M16 in the Army.
Of course, I always qual'd expert with every small arm I shot or carried. Me likes the guns... But I really liked blowing shit up. BTW, I have several blue chips from basic. |
Rifle - Sharpshooter (missed Expert by 2)
Pistol - Expert Grenade - Sharpshooter Machine Gun - Expert That's pretty much it for me. |
I remember the first throw at the plastic Ivan target on the pole, it landed at the targets feet and blew it off the pole and 30 feet into the air. The Instructor just laughed and said it looks like I would do fine with grenades.
Fort Knox 2006 |
Heh, they don't let us AF guys play with grenades. I wish they would have though.
I got expert on the M16 and M9 though...not exactly the same, haha. |
WTF do you have to do to be an "expert" with a grenade? Is there a ribbon?
How can you not qualify expert with them? That always amazed me.
"where's your platoon sergeant, son?" "BLOWN UP SIR!" |
