From my visit in 1983:

I forget which garbage scow I was on, probably the Peleliu.

The island from a CH-46:

At the airfield:

Looking east along the coast, south of the present day airfield:

Looking at Mt Suribachi from Green or Red Beach, where I slept that night:

Still have the map, but not the artifacts:

Wow, pretty cool, did not know the Japs controlled the island with an iron grip.

May have try that, I was on Guam for 2 years and never even thought about going to Iwo Jima.

The entire island is a Japanese military base.  You can't go without special permission.  I got to go a couple of years ago, we tried (active duty with 7th fleet) to get there every year but it's very difficult.

You know we are alies with Japan, and we have been doing training hops on Iwo for decades?  Every time I’ve been there, the Japanese military has been gracious and hospitable.

The Japanese have a totally different view of this war than we do....I think they prefer to think it never happened.
Repatriating their soldiers bodies would just bring it back up.
That is the reason they make it difficult to visit Iwo Jima IMO as well.
There were two fully loaded 737s that landed, in addition to the Commandant of the Marine Corps and many other Marines that flew in for the event.  The Japanese set up 3 portable toilets for maybe 500 people.
They don't make it easy to visit Iwo Jima.
They did stamp my passport...which was good of them.

Interesting Any reason why?

It's hard to go to the island because it is an active military airfield.  It doesn't have anything to do with war memories.

I saw Martha’s piece about this last night. She said there’s now a Japanese flag planted on top of Suribachi, but the film didn’t show it.

Is there an American flag, too, or just the Japanese? Not trying to get anyone riled, just curious.

I don't recall any flags at the top of Suribachi.  I just went back through my pictures and didn't see any.  There's a memorial.  They raise the American flag once a year.

People that have been there. What is the hike up the mountain like? Is it pretty difficult?

Yes.

But not as difficult as Fuji by a long shot. You’ve got an improved road at least.

It’s mainly just really fucking hot.

It’s paved for the most part....the biggest obstacle is the heat and humidity.  There is no cover from the sun either.

I may have a photo, if they didn't burn...wasn't paved when I was there (20 years ago).  I don't remember it being that bad.  I ran it daily when I was there, and I was never what you would call "in shape".   I honestly didn't consider it much of a climb.

Thanks for posting pictures. @omar

For those that have pictures, do you have any from the area around Hill 382, "Turkey Knob," or "The Amphitheater?" I know that the landscape has changed but that's the area the 4th Division was in when my Great Uncle was killed.

The story is that he was killed by a mortar. I know that the after action reports show very intense mortar fire during that part of the attack.

Thanks

All three of those locations are near/South of the present day airfield
Hill 382 - 2d picture in my previous post is near the present day airfield, Hill 382 was probably to the left of where this picture was taken
The Amphitheater - I probably walked through that area - it is just South of Hill 382
Turkey Knob is 600 yards south of Hill 382

I was told this was General Kuribayashi’s command bunker, but my research suggests it was probably Colonel Chosaku Kaido’s. It was being unearthed while we were there, and is probably very close to Hill 382. It was directly south of the main airfield buildings.

Did you know that a Pterodactyl's penis could extend up to four feet, enabling it to mate while in flight? That's still a smaller dick than you're being posting stupid shit like that.
