After I went saltwater fishing, I never went back... But now I don't even saltwater fish any more. I used to be a spaz, repetitively casting trying to hook onto a and immediately jerk a largemouth bass.
Once I switched to set it and forget it saltwater fishing, I enjoyed that much more and the fish are a much better fight pound for pound. Just make sure you really secure your rod and you set your drag light so you don't lose everything, lol. |

I retired at 50. I go fishing, shooting, and hunting, kind of in that order. Pretty much it. Terribly difficult I know.
Tuna are about 50 miles off the OR/WA coast. A bit closer and it is time to go chase them. Amazing fun. Buoy 10 for chinook and coho salmon is just starting up now, gets better in a week or two. Kind of a cluster due to the thousands of people all fishing the Columbia and the bar, but still fun most of the time. Fall salmon on the Columbia itself peaks late August/early Sept. More relaxing to fish on anchor and just relax in between fish. So anyhow- Shit is about to get busy as hell for me again. Biggest fish I ever caught was a 10 foot long sturgeon- on my salmon gear. Approx 400 lb fish, on 40 lb leader. Talk about an epic battle… Fishing is serious business for us. No alcohol or other stupidity allowed on my boat. Don’t need to be drunk to have fun. Freezers are always full of salmon, tuna, and elk, a bit of sturgeon and razor clams as well. If you don’t enjoy it, you are just doing it wrong I guess! |

@Narphenal
Asking why people like to fish is a totally valid question. Saying fishing is over rated is fighting words. Start a poll. Ask how many feel it’s over rated. Why I like fishing: The trout up here taste like steelhead. Steelhead are expensive. I like steelhead. Inexpensive natural fish that I like is a win win. I read books while fishing. I like books. If there’s no time to read that’s great. My wife likes to fish and sometimes does it in a bikini. I like my wife. I like the view while fishing by my property. I like teaching my nieces and nephews to fish. Catching a 6 pound fish on 4 pound test gives me a sense of accomplishment. I like having a sense of accomplishment. I smoke some of the fish I catch. I make smoked fish dip with dill and sour cream. I like smoked fish dip and especially dill. My wife likes to back pack so we back pack up to rivers to fish. I like back packing, fishing and my wife, especially when she does it in a bikini. Sometimes I have a cigar when fishing to keep skeeters away. I like cigars. Sometimes I even reply to threads about fishing, when I’m fishing, because I like threads about fishing. Attached File The cookie sheet is 24” wide Attached File |

I enjoy saltwater fly fishing. It really isn’t about catching the fish. . . I enjoy the international travel, fly tying, fly casting, and camaraderie that it provides. You also meet some really neat people along the way. We’re catch and release for the most part. . .that helps preserve the fishery and gives others the opportunity to have fun too:

You shouldn’t understand it if it’s not your thing. Like how I view golfing or watching sports regularly. Glad others like it, but not my cup.
I love watching the weather patterns and river cfs charts. Finding a good day and ditching work to get on the water for a crisp fall or winter morning. Float my kayak downstream and target fiesty river smallmouth. I am not enthused as I once was chasing fish alll year round. The fall and winter still get me though. |

There are fishermen, then the are people who fish. The fishermen understand the drive and we tend to be a little off.
I fish almost every day, fly fishing is a perishable skill and I like to stay sharp. On a hard weekend I've fished for 18 hours straight covering prolly 3 miles of river fishing through the night and into the day. I fished like this every weekend for almost 2 years driven by something inside that made me chase them. My favorite fishing time is winter around 30 degrees out, maybe some snow. You wader up and get deep in the water so it insulates you. We fish at night chasing big brown trout in my favorite tail waters of MO in the pitch black darkness. It's very surreal and calming to be standing in the middle of the river alone in your thoughts and then getting smashed by a 30+ inch tank of a brown trout that can almost literally rip the rod out of your hands. It's the ultimate rush for me. I fish pretty much everywhere I go. I've caught trout in 14 different states, I love the salt too, and ocean fishing is different yet just as special. I've always been this way, caught my first fish at like 3 or 4 years old... grew up a river rat... |

I can't understand how fishing is enjoyable either. It's similar to gardening as a hobby.
I think I liked it as a kid into my early teenage years, but being trapped on the boat for hours in the heat grew old pretty quick. My dad still likes to go fishing and so do both of my brothers. They go out maybe a couple times a year when they get the chance. I'm always welcome, but I'd rather stay home and stare at the walls than sit out in the heat all day while trying to stab a hook into a worm... To each their own though. I don't have a lot of manly things I enjoy doing though. I'm not into sports, I don't have any interest in cars or wrenching on them, I don't have any interest in hunting, I don't drink beer and I don't like steak. And I think this is the first narphenal post that I'm in agreement with. |
|
I don’t even care about actually catching the fish, in fact I’d probably be just as happy casting a weight instead of a lure. What I like is just being on the water, I find it relaxing. The fishing part of it just gives me justification for sitting out there.

Fishing is life. I get up at 3 am Saturday and Sunday mornings to haul my kayak out into the water chasing smallmouth.
But seeing so many backward hat bro's in 130k bass boats I would agree with you. Fishing sucks, not worth it. Stay off the water. Its the best thing for everyone involved. |

I love eating fresh fish. I hate fishing. And I live in pretty much the fishing Capital of America.

Trout I fish for cause it's close and I get to spend time with my dad.
For fun my brother and I head out for 3/4 days for tuna. Last year my PB went from 40lbs to 178. My office ate damn good for a few meals at least, my aunt had plans on coming out and she damn near ate 10 lbs on the first day! Between my brother and I we brought about 300lbs after processing back home. Striper can be fun if there's boiling fish and your chasing the boil catching fish after fish. |

I enjoy fishing but it has been a long time. None of my family cares about the outdoors, fishing, or hunting. In my Senior year of High School, I skipped the Prom and took my Grandfather fishing. We had a ball. Catching salmon and going clam digging in Alaska was a dream come true experience. Duck hunting in ND was a blast too. Once the boys grew up they lost interest and going alone just didn't cut it anymore. We live about an hour from a reservoir but no wants to have fun. I talked about buying a small boat and the family had a fit. You'd think I was about to rob a bank.

ive been fishing with 22lr, 9mm, 223, 762x39 mostly. much more than ive ever used a fishing pole. to me fishing can certainly be boring going back to just using a pole. my parents never supervised anything much that i did as a child. they worked me on farm like an animal but supervision was few and far between.
ive seen 223 and 545 rounds nearly go thru my feet when wading in shallow water hunting schools of carp. the rounds point back at you and go in a u shape when hitting water for some reason. happens 100% of the time at most angles go try it youll see what i mean. one time ill never forget a carp was down the river bank about 1 foot deep and i aimed a few inches high and with only one shot of 763x39 was shot in half completely with a hungarian kassnar pre ban underfolder ak. most the time carp take half a mag to blow in half like that so how that one exploded is beyond me. |

While I agree with most of your controversial post Mr. Narphenal; you're partially wrong on this topic.
I like to fly fish. I haven't been out in a few years but I like it nonetheless. It's an opportunity to walk away from my busy life for a moment to hike into a beautiful area, and be in the piece and quiet of nature. most fishing though, yeah it's lame as fuck |
