Glorious wonder-worker, St. Peregrine, you answered the divine call with a ready spirit, and forsook all the comforts of a life of ease and all the empty honors of the world to dedicate yourself to God in the Order of His Holy Mother. You labored manfully for the salvation of souls. In union with Jesus crucified, you endured painful sufferings with such patience as to deserve to be healed miraculously of an incurable cancer in your leg by a touch of His divine hand. Obtain for me the grace to answer every call of God and to fulfill His will in all the events of life. Enkindle in my heart a consuming zeal for the salvation of all men. Deliver me from the infirmities that afflict my body, especially... Obtain for me also a perfect resignation to the sufferings it may please God to send me, so that, imitating our crucified Savior and His sorrowful Mother, I may merit eternal glory in heaven. St. Peregrine, pray for me and for all who invoke your aid.

B_P, I have no more words of wisdom to add to those already provided here by those much wiser than me.

They say "Hope for the best but prepare for the worst." You and your family are no doubt making the most of your time the best way you know how. I do suggest that you do your best to be open and honest with your son at a level he can understand. Those conversations are the hardest. Have those tough talks with your wife too.

One of my biggest regrets is that Jeff and I didn't get to have those conversations. We were full of hope and didn't think there was a need in the beginning, then his moments of lucidity toward the end were few and far between.

Know that we're here for you and your family. Don't hesitate to reach out to us for anything you guys need.

Eric, there are no words that can assuage, no axioms that can be imparted, and no levity that can beguile the magnitude of what you've borne witness to and undergone in this damned year to date -- God knows what you now face now as this year wanes.

I cannot begin to suggest that I can represent, or know in any real way, the gamut of emotions you've experienced in your trial. Trepidation accompanies uncertainty. Anger lashes out at that which cannot be controlled. Faith fosters bravery, while sadness courts despair.

We do not fail to acknowledge our own individual mortality in this life, but surely, we expect it be cyclical -- a circle.

That our childhood, full of untold awe and unbridled possibility, make us blindly optimistic. That our adolescence, full of angst and misspent toils, prove us prodigal. That our foray into adulthood, teach us humility and the virtue of temperance as life will have taught us wisdom. That our acquired wisdom, could then be bestowed upon our own children and the circle thus perpetuated.

And here you find yourself. Your own circle (seemingly) broken -- unrealized.

If the moments going forth should ever become fleeting, and the anguish unbearable, take solace in knowing that Matthew will forever know his Father is a Giant.

At the very moment that you weep for Matthew and the imagined instances that you, his Giant, may not be there to bestow wisdom upon him and lift him up into manhood, allow Matthew to bestow his own grace upon you. Let his own youthful state pull you, the man, back down to a remembrance of when your own idyllic innocence of youth knew only of a time to come, just as his does now. If only for a moment, may the two of you exist united in a state of illumination, standing abreast on the circle -- both of your best hopes and optimism frozen together in time.

I pray that time stand still for the two of you....

I spent some time today talking to my aunt about her grandson that was diagnosed with brain cancer at 12.  It was such a rare cancer that NIghtline decided to follow him as he went to St Jude's for treatment.

I knew at the time it was bad, but it wasn't until I saw the NIghtline episode how bad it really was.  When they asked his doctor what his prognosis was, the doctors said it was not good.  When pressed by the journalist to give a percentage, he repeated it's not good.

It turns out no kid survives this particular type of cancer.

Except my nephew.

He's 21, and getting ready to graduate college in a year.  He's been cancer free since he left St Jude's.

Amazing what comes forth when we speak from the heart.

And grammar doesn't matter when our eyes are clouded with tears, when our hearts have taken up a burden.

These times with our distant friends, make this whole thing here,

Worth everything.

You know, BP, it takes a special courage to reach out, to share this journey you're on.

We can't go the whole way with you.

But we're there until it's time for us to leave.

And you might never know the difference made by your sharing, in countless ways, but it has.

And so I pray for that only true miracle, that life does go on, that it is never ending, that pain will leave, that peace will come.

May God bless and keep you and yours.

Nobody cheats death for very long. We're all going to get there one way or another. I'm so sorry for your family that they might lose you sooner than they might have- but your life will be celebrated, cherished memories will survive. This life is only temporary, gone in the blink of an eye- Even for those who live into old age...It becomes more evident to me as I get older, how fast it goes.

I'm not a religious man, but  I'm convinced I'll see my dad on the other side- I miss him so bad since he's passed on- and it makes me fear death a little less I guess. My prayers are for you and your family to let go of all fear of the inevitable, and have a peaceful way of it.

Laugh and smile as much as you can in the time you have, and surround yourself with your family's love, and have peace. You'll all be together again in the end. It's not an ending brother, just another beginning.

BIG_PAP I'm sorry for your situation and you have my sympathy.

When my father passed a member here by the name of sunman76 posted a bible verse to comfort me, I've never forgotten that verse or his compassion.

I'm reposting it here for you and hope it provides you with some measure of solace.
Dear Lord,

We come to you this morning asking you for forgiveness of our sins
that we may come and ask that you will be with this request.

We know that you are faithful and just in all things,  I pray that
you will be with this family in these hard and difficult times and in
the days to come that you will give the comfort and understanding. Lord I
pray that your will be done and that it will be a testimony to those
around Lord we ask these things in your name our Saviour and soon coming
King in Jesus name amen.

OP, I don't know if you'll see this and I don't know if it'll help. And I'll probably get some shit for suggesting it, but start reading The China Study. Essentially only consume small amounts of animal proteins and instead get all of your proteins from plants, and the cancer will not be able to grow (if The China Study is right). It's a highly controversial book but if it's right then the implications are tremendous. Check it out please and Godspeed.

Today and each day after this day for thousands of years the sun will rise and the sun will set. Each one slightly different and beautiful in its own unique way.   We will never see most of those, but words will be and have been written that in some form will be remembered and preserved.   You have inspired us by your being here and sharing your story.  You provide us, those of us who know you only in this electronic passing with hope, fear, and wonder.  We pray for you knowing that it would be a difficult journey if it were our own, yet glad it isn't. We think of the things we would tell our children, our wives, our husbands, our brothers, our sisters, and our mothers and fathers.   You make each of us a little better by sharing with us.  Thank you for that.  Godspeed in this difficult journey.
