Cashed out my 401k. 17k.

Bought gold etf's with it.

I'm hoping this was a good decision. Took me a long time to get that much money.

Maybe I should have gone 50/50 gold/silver?

What specifically do you mean by “gold etfs”.   Spell them out.

The trick is to make this move when stocks are down and gold is up.

When gold hits $5000 try cashing them out for bullion.

The good news is you don’t have much to lose.

The bad news is that 17K in an index fund will more than double in 7-years

What is ETF?  Is that like a piece of paper that says you own gold?

Serious question?

At today's spot value 17,000 would be 9.5 tr oz, would rather have the metal

Gold has underperformed stocks and bonds for the last 100 years...

Why would you do this?

If you're under 25 with less than $20k in a 401k you're not making good choices to begin with, so go take a big guess.

Dollar collapses and his gold ETF is worth zero, because the bank and trading platforms that allowed him to buy the ETF are collapsed.

True, but you could have bought $78,000 today in gold to hold in your hand and still have $134,000 in your 401k.......

OP

Hope is a poor investment method.
Making 100% bets on any one asset is risky as hell.

Good luck, because you will need it.

Silver has been out performing gold today.

Could go 100% silver.

I actually did trade SLV last week.

FPNI

I wonder how many thousands of people have thought this was a good idea over the last 50 years...

I thought half the fun for you precious metals guys is having the stuff in your hands, spreading it out to adore it, and rolling around with it on the bed like Scrooge McDuck.

Shares in a gold fund doesn't sound like much fun at all.

Gold shouldn't be looked at as an investment, in my opinion.  It performs horribly compared to most other options.

You'd have been much better off leaving it in your 401K and moving it all to the S&P500 instead of whatever super conservative funds it was in by default.

I had more fun trading iron condors.

Though I don’t understand why they call them iron condors if they are actually silver.

Gold is about 500x oversold on paper.

Unless you took possession, you may never see it.  And you'll lose money in any recovery.

Never get out of the market. This was a terrible decision.

If you're looking to get rid of any more money, let me know and I'll PM you my address.
