A pretty good one is the most recent (2019) War of the Worlds. It's episodic, so things unfold over time. Most characters are English or French. There's a lot of character development vs. action, but when the action comes the tension and fear is palpable. It seems like one of those love-it-or-hate it films, with people expecting a bombastic film being the haters.
For pure popcorn sci-fi action fun, my go-to is Battleship. |

I thought it was a really good little B sci fi movie. 2 other obscure sci fi movies worth checking out are Monsters of Man and Bloodshot. I think Bloodshot got no press and shitty critic ratings b/c it isn't woke at all, and the lead actress is absolutely gorgeous. |
