Area, size, distance. Pick two. Projection can make maps appear very different for the same place. $1 says this guy works in GIS. $1 says you do too. ESRI much? a little, but not as much as i'd like. actually missed a workshop with this guy this weekend. his GIS work is fantastic. That's really neat stuff he does. Impressive professional credentials. |

You're worried about Japan OP? GUAM is where you need to worry....it could sink at any moment! It might tip over and capsize! By some estimates Grenada rose-up out of the ocean by a foot when returning GIs toted away every bit of war booty not nailed down. From what I understand Grenada was the reason "bring back" stuff is severely limited now. |

Maps are flat representation of a curved surface. Of course it's distored and some parts are smaller because they reflect the curved portion of the land that doesn't fit nicely on a flat surface.

My son has traveled to Japan a few times. One odd thing I notice is that if you zoom in on google maps, ( Map view) on Tokyo you see many symbols in Japanese characters but also a lot of little swastikas. (??) Must be a Japanese symbol of some sort. the Swastika was around a long time before the Nazis adopted it. Something like 5K+ years. Which is why anti swastites are tards. |

Remember that show in the '70s?
The Berenstein Japs? About a family of Jewish Japanese bears? |

But if you make Japan vertical instead of having the map North at the top, then I suppose it looks like they are more side-by-side. EDIT: No, I guess OP is right. It has moved! It's clearly mostly North of Korea. I'll be damned. |

Do they not use globes in school anymore? Nor discuss the various ways of projecting the globe on a flat map and the resulting distortions? |

There has been talk of connecting them for years. You map leaves out Hokkaido, perhaps so as not to have to confront the dissonance. Then there's the whole "Sea of Japan" thing - a name that seems a lot less appropriate in your world. The Koreans would be happy. How many more Kurile Islands are there in your world? |

Fairly close.
Any time you take a globe and make it flat you have some distortion issues. |

Japan did drift closer to NA due to quakes... by about 13 feet.
