For those thinking Jared's life is completely over: consider by the time he gets out of prison he'll be in his 40's with probably at least $10M.
His reputation and almost all of his relationships will be ruined, but that's enough money to move to a far away tropical paradise and live like a king. Definitely a better ending that most diddlers get. |

A few ex-cons I know tell me that federal prisons are usually MUCH nicer then state prisons. Only downside to fed prisons that you have to do 85% of your time to have a chance at parole. Not defending him, but the only person that the article says he had sex with was the 17 year old, in New York City.
The age of consent in New York is 17. He did not break the law. It's probably not right, but other than paying for the sex, the age is not a legal issue. Do you think such laws cannot change? The age delineating both a minor and the age of consent are arbitrarily fixed by law and can just as easily be arbitrarily adjusted up or down by law. Age of Consent is just that. You can be a minor (under 18), but above age of consent (say 16 years old), and sexual activity is not illegal, if the age of consent is under 18. Some states have odd applications of this, though. In North Carolina there's an added stipulation that even under age of consent (16 here), as long as less than 3 years difference in ages exist, it's still legal. As in, I shit you not, a 12 year old girl and a 14 year old boy is legal. A 12 year old girl and 16 year old boy is not. If it's more than 6 years it's a more severe felony charge is applied. So, a 6 year old girl and 13 year old boy carries a very long jail sentence. And yes, they've prosecuted cases like that. My girlfriend worked for the DA prosecuting child sex abuse cases for 5 years. The things I heard about will turn your hair white. |

I know from people that work with child sex abuse victims that when you meet the perps all sorts of alarm bells go off in your head. Children don't have a well-calibrated alarm system so they can more easily be taken advantage of and the creeps know this. However, even the kids have an inkling of this is wrong, but they haven't been trained to trust in that feeling and act on it. I honestly think that parents should sit down and people watch with their kid, asking the kid, "What about him? Freak or not?" and have the kid respond. If they get it all the time, good, if not, keep pointing out the weirdos until the kid spots them on their own. |

That is one area of law that will always be filled with a large dose of "damned if you do and damned if you don't" for elected representatives and prosecuting attorneys. I have heard of/read about similar cases in different states. Some of the ways current law are written (i.e. the example you posed) is down right dumbfounding and, in my opinion, needs to be addressed. There are many lives that have been categorically decimated due to such laws (felony conviction, sex offender registration, prison, fines, legal fees, publicly ostracized, etc) who perhaps should not have been and I see this is a possible avenue for certain individuals with less than honorable intentions to attack the various laws revolving around this issue for their own personal gain. |

There are all sorts of little tells and "alarm bells" that go off when preparing and auditing a tax payer's tax return. It's interesting to see the look on a taxpayers' face when you can tell them their entire story (which they were trying to hide from you) from a few key details they did not think mattered in the slightest. If possible, could you share some of those alarm bells for those of us fortunate enough to have never worked with/been around sexual predators? I knew an FBI agent who worked child porn cases. I could never do his job. |
