200lbs seems low.

Is that a lot for a horse to carry a 250lb rider? (Depending on the size of the horse)

He was about 300 and I remember a few episodes he had a body strapped on or was riding 2 up. Horses are eating too much soy now too.

As a former horse owner I wouldn't let the fat chick ride my horses either. If she were properly trained and I had a draft horse maybe but I had Arabians that could break a leg under their own weight, no way in hell would she be able to do anything but pet one of mine.

But she said she was shocked by the way one of the ranch employees spoke to her, and felt compelled to share her experience.

Meh... he could have said anything from "Ma'am, we have a weight limit for our horses" to "Holy shit, tubby, you ain't gonna be squishing one of OUR horses!".   But I'd bet it was closer to the former.

Having unfortunately lived that horse lifestyle for a while post 2000, I can attest that WAY bigger women ride horses.

In fact, a LOT of women who ride are massive, much bigger than the woman in OP's pic.

That being said there are a lot of super fit riders as well

@TobyLazur

10-20% of horses body weight depending on task and breeding. Most "rental" horses are pretty fit from being worked often but are also often older or well traveled and maybe a little worn. Can't be putting customers on green broke unknowns. Most hack stables aren't keeping big drafters either, they're expensive even by horse standards, they're also huge and intimidating to novices even if they're usually super chill big lumps.

For your average 11-1200# qh/Morgan/whatever it's a safe blanket number. I know a few people around 250 who are beautiful balanced riders that are light on the horse and really fun to watch.

I know a couple people around 150 that are a trainwreck and can't figure out why their horse is always sore and sour

Actually she could be depending on the size of the horse and/ or the terrain she would be riding in.

My horse is 16.2 and weights nearly 1300 pounds and I wouldn't allow that fat bitch ride her.

Besides, it ain't her fucking horse. I've told people who thought they were going to get on my horses and act stupid to get the fuck off of them.

Their feelings aren't worth the long term pain and damage to the horse, the long term medical bills that I'm responsible for, even if they pay for the short term damage.

They don't like it, fuck 'em. They can find a fucking draft horse to ride, learn to drive and sit their fat asses in a damn cart or wagon or go on a god damned diet and exercise program and lose some fucking weight!

The television and movie industry used to abuse and kill animals all the time while filming. It's why you see the No animals were harmed during the filming of this production spiel on every show that has an animal.

NY laws man!

Under New York State agricultural law, overloading or otherwise harming any wild or tame animal is a class A misdemeanor.

Anyone found guilty can be sentenced to up a year in prison, and assessed a fine of as much as $1,000 or twice the amount they gained from the crime.

Balance and weight distribution matter.

Carrying a controlled, balanced, quiet rider with soft hands, good leg, and a firm seat, even at 330 lbs, is much different than a 250# unbalanced feed sack lurching all over the place as she twists around for the best selfie angle or to jabber at her friends while sawing at the horse’s mouth and wildly kicking and flailing her legs around.

I’m tiny enough I wouldn’t look out of place on a Welsh pony, but I prefer riding drafts and draft crosses. I’m planning on breeding my paint mare to a spotted draft for a possible fox hunting prospect.

Do it! Halftie drafty all the things.

I can do the smalls, got lucky with tall and slender built but power comes with size, 16.2 or less unless they're real solid is meh.
