Graduated on the 22nd of July according to the Turret (post newspaper). Seems like the end of an armor tradition. Hope its not a dupe.

Now that brings a tear to my eye! I was hoping the move to Benning would be changed. I still don't know where on Benning they'll be shooting tank gunnery. What a shame!

So Ft. Knox is no longer home of Armor now? Armor and Cav is moving to Benning, IIRC. I was in F Co., 1/81 AR 2000-2001 19K OSUT. Damn that was a lifetime ago. |
|
Wow, I graduated from BAT (Basic Armor Training) as a 19E back in the day and went through 19K NETT a couple of years later.
That's sad. |

I know there were a couple cav troops that were dropping M3 gunnery from OSUT because it was hideously expensive training for the scouts and almost no one goes directly to gunner in the Armor community from basic. So it would not surprise me if they didn't drop gunnery entirely. I guess they do need to be trained to load though.... |
|
Well, I never would have believed the Armor school would be moved to Benning. My old man was Armor and I was Infantry. I bet he is rolling over in his grave.
Saying that, I was at Benning on Monday and seeing all the growth is really something. Harmony Church is now the Armor school. I'm sure some old school 11B's are freaking out about that. It was truly the end of an era when they stopped OSUT at Harmony Church. I remember sitting there learning how to send a SPOT report and watching them bull doze barracks and then set the debris on fire. |
|
I went through there in 87 as a 45N then again in 90 as a quicky recall school as a 45E. |
|
So they gonna fold Ft. Knox up? I mean what is left there other than sending folks through basic?
My dad went through there in basic in 69' coldest damn winter he ever spent |
|
Quoted:
So Ft. Knox is no longer home of Armor now? Yes and they gutted the Patton Museum. It's now the General George Patton Museum of Leadership. My grandpa took me there when I was a kid, twice a year, to see the tanks. I started that tradition when I had kids. Now, no tanks, nothing. They moved all the good stuff to Fort Benning. |

I was a winter cycle back in '81-'82 and walking guard around Holder complex in the snow sucked on more levels than I can explain. BTW, Tanks do INDEED slide on ice.... |

Who are they going to move in? I believe HRC and a brigade of 1ID will be up there with some other random support units. Armor Center is for the most part up and running at benning. Just did Cav Leaders Course at Benning at Harmony Church. A few basic training companies are up and running, see them marching around. Armor BOLC is at Benning now. Where will they do Gunnery? 3ID does have a HBCT at Benning that has tanks... so same place as them. I did hear they are upgrading and making some more maneuver areas somewhere. I was hoping they would criss-cross all the ranger school training lanes... Bldg. 4 on Benning is getting a HUGE make over its even bigger now. |
|
I guess the last troop of 19Ds already graduated. Had to get the scouts down to Benning so they could keep the CDATs from getting lost.

That sucks!! I was in Bravo 1/81 1990 grad.... Then stationed back 2 years later in 1/16th cav Bravo company, teaching tank commanders certification coarse (TC3), and AOB students.

I think this plan to re align the post has been in the works for at least 5 years, if not more. They need to hurry up and set up the Armor/Cavalry Museum to out do the new Infantry one. |

When I thought my son was enlisting as a 19K, I said;
Well, at least I can tell you a little about basic, I went to Knox as well.....Then, I went online looking for the Armor Center and School.... Benning.mil I think Ft Knox is going to be gone in the next round of closings. I can't imagine why it needs to stay open now other than if they station a heavy BCT there or something. |

They gonna move the gold repository too? Why bother? There's nothing in it |

As of a few years ago anyway it actually gained quite a few people from the BRAC realignment. People that would remain in the community vs. trainees. I dont know if that is still the case or not now though. This BRAC has been in the works before Obama came into power.

An OUTRAGE. How can the move the home of the Mounted Arm of Combat to the home of the Queen of battle?
A dark day. Scout Out |

anyone have any idea what the course at benning will be like? benning is about twice the size of knox

Quoted: anyone have any idea what the course at benning will be like? benning is about twice the size of knox If i had a guess I'd say exactly the same or as near as they can make it. At least for ABOLC, virtually all tank training takes place on a 5k by 10k area. |

Last August I took the kids, we always go in the summer and on Xmas break, and they told us then that the armor was being moved to Benning I just stood there and damn neared cried, thinking of the times I had with my Grandpa. The kids were devastated. My daughter did cry. |

I was in E 5/15 Cav Sept 200- Jan 2001 just down the road from you! I started basic in Nov. and graduated in March. We were the last group through F Co. 1/81, and I was privileged enough along with the rest of the NG soldiers and those waiting to leave for Fort Hood to clean out our building for 3 days. But we had nights off. It was very strange to work with our drill Sergeants as if we were active duty and not trainees anymore. Smoking with a DS in the smoke shack was just weird. I remember the head DS (E7) freaking the fuck out about us smoking, but one of my DSs basically saying WTF, "they're soldiers now". Memories, man. |

I was at Knox for AIT in '82, 63T (armor/wheel mechanic)
I like the move to Benning. We were there last year when my son graduated from OCS, the new buildings are there waiting for the transition.. |

Former D 1/81 here. Any other Marine tankers? You guys' barracks was right next door to us when I went through Basic. You fuckers were allowed to smoke and shit. Bastards. I bet you Marines learned a lot more about the M1 than we did. |

I did my OSUT Jun-88 thru Oct 88 at C/1-81.
Damn, hate to see it go. |
|
NTC GLakes just graduated the last class of Hospital Corpsmen this week.
All the medics from the various services going to Sam Houston for medical training now. |

What MOS is 19K ? In my time it was M1 Tank Crewman, I assume it's M1A2 (or what ever upgrade it is today) Tank Crewman now. |

Most of the good stuff at the museum is GONE. Shit,
they even took a bunch of the fucking tanks that were on display through out the post. The Sherman that was between the PX and Commissary...GONE . The two M48s just past the burger king...GONE. I wouldn't be surprised if they took the toilet paper off the rolls! |

They were always in the main PX finger fucking everything and generally pissing people off. Very little discipline. |

Now, I was not 19 series, so it was only BCT..That may have made a diffrerence. In all seriousness, we thought it was not out of the realm of possibility that Drill SGT Cash would kill us if we screwed up and someone outside the BCT area saw it. |

I was up there all last summer for NTC and this spring for a class and Knox is exploding.
But yes, fresh booters walking around the px like god themselves..... Locking them up is always fun, "Roger Specialist!" Takes a lot of disciprine to not laugh when they say that shit... |
