There are people on here who think that is what cops should always do. I would have shot him after the first 5-10 seconds of non compliance.
Those cops were lucky as shit, and I can't really bash them, they didn't want to kill someone. Even after shots were fired they tried to tase him which is commendable, but fucking retarded. |

Retreating only reinforces dominance in the mind of the suspect.
Maintain a safe distance and give ultimatum. Comply or get shot. |

But, in the deescalation class I went to they showed us a video of like 18 cops that just kept backing up while some dude with a knife walked along the street. It was lauded a great example of patience and restraint because eventually the guy got talked out of his weapons and into handcuffs. I wonder if this officer had seen that video? |

In todays world, I could see why he may have. The suspect was shot multiple times, went to the ground and dropped the knife. He then gets back up and charges the officer without the knife. During my 47.5 year career as a LEO, I came within ounces of trigger pull of killing someone twice. By the grace of God I did not have to shoot either time, but had the hammer back on my model 19 Smith in the midst of a double action pull one time when the kid (16 years old) threw down. The second time was a drunk we had a misdemeanor assault warrant on come out the door with a rifle in his hands. After an intense back and forth he finally lowered the rifle from port arms and laid it down on the trunk of a car. In todays anti-law enforcement climate, I do not tell anyone to seek a career in policing. It is too easy to get thrown under the bus even when a shooting is totally, legally justified. You can lose everything you own and have your life ruined defending yourself in court.

I'm surprised that it hasn't been mentioned yet, but what about the fact that they had a perp wandering around waving a knife that would not listen...?
Sure, cops need to defend themselves, but I would hope they'd also think about taking action to prevent others who might be around from harm. What if the perp grabbed a passerby? Shitty situation all 'round, but I agree with whoever suggested... three steps back... ultimatum... shoot if non compliant.... file report... go home. |
