Shot placement is key and while the hole may be smaller than a 308, it will penetrate just as far. If I couldn't get a good shot then I wouldn't take it.  Some Hunters tend to get a little overconfident because they bought the Magnum whatever to take their game. Magnum does not compensate for lack of accuracy or shot placement.

.223 isn't adequate for anything larger than deer, and it's marginal for that in my area.  Longer shots here are the rule.  .243,  .270, 06, .308, etc are the common calibers.  I took a buck this year at 380 yards with my .308

.22lr is just fine for white tail.

Magnums mearly add range, you put a .30 cal hole through lungs and a heart it dies.  Also some bullets at magnum speeds will not perform correctly at close range.  But it's America here, if you love more recoil and expensive shells be my guest.
