Cougars belong in the wild woods, domesticated dogs do not. One thing I like about the national parks is nobody can bring their dogs on the trail.

I don't hate dogs, but I value the wildlife more than the need for a canine companion in the woods. Unless you're mushing. Then you're just badass.

Put a 12ga slug through about a 135# wild hogs head from point blank between it's eye and ear and that sucker still charged for what felt like 30-45 seconds.

I had something like this a few days before Christmas in 2017 except with a smaller wildcat, I was the target and not a dog, and I had a tomahawk, not a machete.

https://i.imgur.com/VHGxjcE.jpg

(A lot of the red stuff is also mine)

That was a very strange day, and the $13,000 hospital bill made me very thankful for insurance.

The tomahawk worked, but if I could go back I'd have had a gun on me 11 times out of 10. I spiked the fucking cat through the skull four times including burying it in its eye clear up to the shaft and the fucking thing just yelled at me and kept attacking like it was the fucking exorcist and didn't need a brain to keep fighting. Flipped it around and swung with every ounce of strength I had with the axe blade to its forehead over and over while it was literally trying to take my left hand off and was clawing my forearm. Tenth blow it suddenly went into slow motion, eleventh blow cracked its skull open and dumped blood all over the place and the fight was over. I had a one-handed Christmas that year (thankfully everything healed up back to 100%).

Got the rabies vaccine just in case, but the tests came back negative. Goddamn cat was just a savage monster.

Fuck*** savage! I heard of a guy who was attacked in NM and he said he felt powerless against the mountain lion. His dad came running while firing a handgun and the cat ran.

I had a mountain lion run a couple feet in front of me on a trail a few years ago, and then ran back across the trail behind me the ladies screaming gave it away. They look way bigger in person and this one was tagged.

They are. People don't think they're up here in Appalachia, but they ARE. Had one at Camelback Resort a few years back. There was one outside a place called Valerio's up here on 903 up in the damn trees and we had one in our neighborhood last year. Game Commission insists they're not here, but tell that to the Grizzly Bear from back in 2017 in Sullivan County LOL

But they don't always just fall...

I have put numerous rounds of .40 and .223 on Louisiana hogs that still ran away.  You get damn nervous when they run into the brush of a dense forest and the sound of shaking small trees is all you hear.

Would it have gone better if he'd stabbed it instead of hacking away at it?

But the dog was probably finished in the opening seconds.
View Quote

Depends on the blade profile. Standard latin style machetes don't have tips that work well for stabbing (they also don't have the mass for chopping deep through bones even when they ARE shaving sharp, unless you're talking about tge 24" or longer ones where blade/tip speed helps when chopping).

Brush Demon for a shorter, light machete that's also stabby

A good kukri is also a powerful chopper.

Pity about the dog. Wonder if it would gave survived if the owner had a firearm and popped the cougar on first contact?

Nope. They make ceremonial HUGE kukris specifically for the purpose of beheading cattle. These aren't your usual 12" - 15" bladed kukris. They're basically kukri shaped swords.
