Read it. Single jet engine world speed record. Still stands today. Every Phantom I've seen had two engines or the pilot was screaming MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY on the radio. Means the F106 was faster in the 1950's (and 1960's) than the F16 is now. Speed was a big thing in those days. The faster they could get form the ADC bases along the Canadian border to the Russian bombers they expected to fly over the North Pole, the more chances they had to knock them down before they got here. They actually developed a nuclear warhead missile (F101 Voodoo could carry it, too) for the idea of taking out multiple Russian bombers if they could get to them before the split up coming across northern Canada. It was called the Genie. Single jet engine speed record. The took two F106's out there for the record attempt. They spent time/effort prepping one for the attempt and then couldn't use it due to some failure or other. The pilot jumped into the back up that didn't have an special prep work done to it and still set a record that stands to this day. Nothing Russia or China (or anyone else) has built with a single jet engine is faster than an airplane the US built in the 1950's. I always thought they were cool planes. What speed record is that? The Dart's airspeed record (1525MPH) was beaten less than two years later by the F4 (1606MPH). Current record for manned, powered aircraft is still the X-15 at 4,520MPH. Kaman H-2 "Tomahawk" - One built as a gunship variant of the UH-2A for US Army trials. Had a pair of twin-mounted 7.62 machine guns in the nose. NUH-2C - Per Wikipedia: "One test and evaluation helicopter. One UH-2C helicopter was modified with stub-wings and pylons for weapons trials, missiles fitted included the AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-7 Sparrow III air-to-air missiles." HH-2C - Six Seasprites were converted to this version armed with a minigun in a chin-mounted turret. Had extra armor as well if I recall correctly. All six aircraft were assigned to HC-7 during the Vietnam War. I think the minigun and armor were really too heavy for the aircraft. Would love to see a similar configuration tried today on the SH-2G version. |

The airplane that caused Lockheed to bribe half of Western Europe and Japan to beat it, the General Electric J79-powered Grumman F11F-1F (F-11B) Super Tiger.
"The aircraft first flew on 25 May 1956, reaching Mach 1.44 in one of the flights. After the addition of 60-degree wing root fillets, a 13.5 in (35 cm) fuselage extension, and an uprated J79 engine, the F11F-1F reached an impressive Mach 2.04 in 1957, thus becoming the first naval aircraft in the world to exceed Mach 2 (two years before the F4H, the F8U-3 and the A3J). This was a surprise even to Grumman, which had expected a top speed of only Mach 1.4 at altitude." View Quote Another airframe taken to a wholly different level by the addition of the J79, the Douglas F5D Skylancer. |

The crusader always looked good to me. The super crusader looked like it wanted to go out, find bad guys, rip off their heads, shit down their necks then go burn down their villages.

On the cheap? Bob Pond poured a heap of money into that project and he owned a hangar full of warbirds he could have made into unlimited racers but the whole point was to build a production racer so that people would stop racing antiques.

Look up the Airphibian by Robert Fulton. Three of the planes were stored in a barn very near here for years. Danny View Quote Airphibian I like the XP-67 Bat. Beautiful lines, and maybe had some lending to later stealth designs? Another oddity.. Proteus |
