View Quote we had a rough time on the res when I was a little kid for a while, use to line up and get food once a month. food welfare the way it should be....good incentive to get off welfare if you have to stand in line in public and wait for food handouts. we had clothing at start of school year also...basic, jean, shirt under wear, shoes. Looking back, for a few years we were poor...until dad got trained and hired at power plant and got out of carpentry work. really didn't know we were poor, had a good family... |

Just restrict EBT purchases to select food categories and put a cap on how much can be used for "Discretionary Items" like steak and lobster. Problem solved, and the gov. isn't in the cheese business again.
|
|
so they would need to hire people/services for packaging distribution etc etc and somehow that is going to be cheaper than just giving people ebt cards?
They could just further restrict what can be bought with them and skip all the bullshit. let's not forget how healthy the food pyramid was for america either. |

The best part is how this takes the liberal “food desert” claim out of play.
No. It will help but not eliminate the issue. The food desert claim is based upon the availability of healthy foods - fresh fruits and vegetables. Distributions to the poor will have to be shelf stable products. So, the meat, for example, comes in a can. Same with the fruits and veggies. May be more healthy than some foods, but hardly the healthy diet made the basis of the food desert argument. Moreover, a beans and rice or a beans and potato diet is not particularly healthy. Low salt beans with brown rice, a large serving of green veggies and a serving of lean protein is healthy. Re-fried beans and white rice (or white rice with a sauce topper) are not really healthy. |
|
It would be great for some, but most welfare rats will either throw away stuff or sell black market if it requires any effort to cook.

I love it! The best part is how this takes the liberal “food desert” claim out of play. How can they be against food delivered to their voters? Isn’t that what they want? Plenty of people live in a “food desert” geographically, but have methods of transportation to overcome the geographical limits. Liberals like to talk about the ones in the inner city, but the Hollers of Appalachia have plenty. How would you get to a full service grocery store with only public transportation and walking? |
|
The Choctaws still do this for tribal members based on income. They have it set up like a regular grocery store. My 86 year old mother gets a list every month with what she can get for that month.
She can get so many cans of vegetables and can choose what kind she wants from what selection they have on the shelves. she also gets canned fruit, flour, corn meal, cereal, and oat meal. The only meat available is frozen hamburger, chicken, and once in a while ground bison. Oh, and the cheese is still awesome. |

I’ve been mulling this over for 15-20 minutes now. Nope, still can’t see a downside.

Wait, you mean that people on food stamps won't be able to buy Twinkees, Ring Dings, Ho Hos, Doritos, candy bars, and ice cream anymore?
And they will be given HEALTHY FOOD? So themselves and their kids won't be morbidly obese anymore? OMG that's fucking SO racist. And sexist too. Trump is LITERALLY HITLER! |
|
This is a great idea. Why?
Because food stamps/ snap are not about the recipients or the needy. It's about Walmart and the grocer getting them some sales that otherwise wouldn't happen. I.e. corporate welfare. What starts with noble intent run by the government ends up a crooked racket enriching those that would corrupt good intentions. |
|
The best part of this is... when it doesn't pass because the usual suspects are all screaming their usual horseshit, Trump can simply say "look folks, we tried to make it easier for our poor to get food and we offered them a healthy option, but they turned it down. They don't really care about the quality of food going to the people who need the most help."
It's a lose-lose battle for the Democrats but they'll fight it anyway. |

I'd prefer they had to waddle their fat asses to a warehouse, personally, but you can't have it all. |

This is a game of 4d chess he proposes something extreme like this, and settles for restrictions on what can be bought with food stamp money.
Personally I think they should do it with modern logistics, fresh food could be delivered every week. |

In what would be one of the biggest shakeups of the U.S. food-stamp program in its five-decade history, President Donald Trump is proposing to slash cash payments and substitute them with "100 percent American grown food" given to recipients. The changes, outlined Monday in Trump’s budget proposal, would reshape the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which supports roughly one in eight Americans, by reducing cash spending by about one-third from current levels. The plan is part of an effort to reform SNAP and save a projected $214 billion over a decade. It would give all households receiving more than $90 a month in cash a food-aid package that would "include items such as shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish," according to the proposal. The so-called USDA America’s Harvest Box "is a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families -- and all of it is home grown by American farmers and producers," Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said in a statement. The program would provide food-stamp recipients with "the same level of food value" as the current system, Perdue added. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-12/trump-budget-swaps-food-stamps-for-100-percent-american-food View Quote |

Food Stamps were designed as a program to prop up the American Farmer. That program would just be a wash.

These programs need to be cut away at the federal government level altogether.
If it is a government matter at all, it's for state/local governments to handle. If the government is going to handle it, there should be large warehouses run by state/local government and non-government entities. After careful screening for eligibility, those requiring SNAP/EBT should report to said warehouses to pick up their government meat, government cheese, government grain, government bread, etc., only the nutritious staples that preserve life. No so-called "junk food," and nothing involving "cards" or "stamps," which do nothing but invite fraud. These programs are about nutrition and sustenance, and the people picking up the tab should have a say in determining the menu. |

I see a business opportunity. The same companies that now benefit can continue to do so, but on a wholesale level. The boxes need to be manufactured and delivered to a packing facility. They then need to be filled and distributed. To be a recipient, one must fill X number of boxes per week/month/quarter. All of this activity needs to be managed. Contracts would need to be let and the work organized. It could be a win for everybody involved except the taxpayers that are robbed in order to fund this legalized crime. Well this is a good start but it needs some changes;
- Boxes need to contain a bag of rice, powdered milk, powdered eggs, & a block of cheese - nothing more. - Recipients should be given a date/time to pick up their box from the nearest federal courthouse or military base once a month. - If they miss their appointment, they get nothing. - If they don't do their assigned tasks while they're there (IE: cut the grass, empty the trash, or pick up cigarette butts), they get nothing. - If they fail a drug test, they get nothing. - If they are overweight, they only get half rations (to start). - If they continue to be overweight, their box keeps getting smaller until they are booted from the program - if they can find food somewhere else they don't need taxpayer help. |

Food Stamps should have been administered like WIC (Women Infants and Children) all along. With WIC, the mother receives vouchers every few months which have VERY detailed lists of what she may get with them. Hell, kids age 2 and up can't even get whole milk, thy have to get skim, 1 1/2%, or a couple of other healthy options. Everything available through WIC is the healthiest options, such as whole wheat or the equivalent. View Quote Or the myth that skim milk is better for you than whole milk...... |

FUCK YES I APPROVE!
Welfare should not be a convenience and it should make people using it feel ashamed. I have no problem with a food box of shelf stable goods. Fuck Kraft and their EBT welfare sucking business model. Fuck KFC for accepting EBT. Government provided food should be the healthy bare staples. I didn't have EBT/SNAP/WIC as a kid growing up. I simply had hard working Parents and Grandparents. Money was tight for a few years. White Rice with a Fried Egg on top or Store Brand Mac & Cheese with Vienna Sausages. Didn't have soda everyday. It was two water and if I were lucky store brand Kool-Aid drink mix. Life got better as our family worked hard and took part of the American Dream. I remember when my Abuela as a treat would take us grandkids to Publix and we all got to pick out a treat. I always went after the Publix brand Ice Cream Sandwichas. My cousin Megan got the giant can of Potato Sticks. Shut, I still cook poor at home now and the wife and I are doing well. But we grew up eating poor people Cuban and Puerto Rican food. Me it was Rice with a Fried Egg, her it was White Rice with ketchup and diced hotdogs. Steak for us is still a treat. We usually eat pork or chicken since it is cheap. |
