Or know details of the weapon, how he got it, etc. I mean, it is probably exactly what you think, but no one even knows the details yet.

ETA: We do know some details, AR-10 of some flavor.

What’s the most sensible explanation for him abandoning his rifle?

Seems like he’d want it to either off himself or fight the authorities. Maybe a different gun chosen for suicide?

That is a lot of hate directed at that Tacoma.  I find interesting that the picture shows both entrance and exit damage from the shots. Did he circle  it while he was shooting it up?

Pistol would be easier for suicide.

If it is indeed, the murder weapon, it would indicate that he was done doing what he set out to do, which = much higher chance his body is rotting somewhere.

I doubt there are many Mainers that have guns that only have one. If I was going to be moving through the deep woods with ammo, I would want not want to carry .308.

Anybody that has a .308 AR also has at least one 556 rifle if not a dozen.

They were using different sonars/scans and setting up a grid system yesterday and today to prepare for more resources becoming available tomorrow, some of which are from out of state.

Used up the ammo and it was a paper weight?  Switched to a 5.56 or maybe a 9mm for later hunting?

A $2000 thermal is going to be useless for real work.  He'll be able to see the barn that is on fire, but won't get much detail out of it.

Here's what I'm thinking: he chose an AR-10 in .308 with expanding ammo to cause as much damage as possible. He ditched it because it was unreliable and either ventilated the roof of his mouth with a 9mm, or he's switched to another rifle of some sort to keep waging war as he most likely believes he's doing.

He could have had multiple, or had a cache somewhere. Easier to move without a 9 pound stick to haul around. And draws less attention, assuming someone sees you but doesn't figure out who you are.

Well, if he barely ever shot the thing, if ever, and just bought whatever ammo was wherever he bought it, he may have had no idea how it was going to perform. Maybe finicky magazines.

I'm a big guy, and even I don't really enjoy humping my AR-10 from the cabin out to the Deer Blinds & back.

Toss in 6 or so fully loaded magazines and it certainly wouldn't be easy trying to bust brush across the Maine wilderness.
