When the EPA and NOAA have their own SWAT teams, there is no need for a federal police force.

We don't need the one we have.

Most countries are not even as big as most of our states.

So a national police force in a country the size of IN is not the same as what we have here.

Ever had dealings with FBI and some others? Might as well give the DMV people badges and guns, only they rival their inefficiency and love of forms and reports on nothing.

I think he wants something like the Cabanari which is actually a military national police. It would be like if Army MPs patrolled our streets. Not a good idea.

The Carabinieri are a good fit for Italy. I would not like to see that system implemented here.

And a better comparison would be the coast guard.

Close but they are considered part of their military but there is not quite an american equivalent. The Coast Guard is a more apt analogy.

Wrong, they are responding to 911 calls. They are also being given the power to enforce state and local laws under "assimilated acts' granted by local authority. It might not be their primary job right now, but in certain events you would see them in a much different positions. The groundwork was laid out years ago.

The first time I dealt with them as a cop was when they called into dispatch they were behind a vehicle where the registered owner had warrants, and they needed backup. The warrant wasn't federal, it was a state warrant. The vehicle ditched him in a large apartment complex, and I asked him what jail he had planned on booking the suspect if he had caught him. He had been under the assumption (per his superiors) that part was for "local law enforcement" to clean up. I am pretty sure he didn't like me when I finished providing my backup services.
