No really great light mount options for the factory hand guard. The aridus magpul hand guard works or some use the gg&g light mount that fit on the mag tube. Others use the Nordic barrel clamp.

Is the comp trigger better than the tactical?  I got that impression from a previous comment somewhere in this discussion.

The comp is built on the 3.5" frame so it's easier to load.  On the older models the comp also had chokes where the others were fixed.

I wish I bought a comp model, but I didn’t know the difference at the time in receiver length or the opened up loading port. But I did only pay $650 for my gen 1 tactical - I don’t think the gen 1 comps ever sold for that cheap.

If beretta just made the tactical with the comp receiver it would be so much better, and all the barrel lengths would interchange

I don't use a sling on my home defense guns.

But if you wanted to run both you can put a sling mount or a light mount forward with a barrel clamp attachment. Or use something like the BFG universal sling loop.

Conjecture, but maybe it was too tall an order to get it to run reliably with everything from light 2 3/4" target loads to 3 1/2" buck and slugs.

Other than putting on the full Aridus Zhukov handguard thing, what are the best options for mounting a light?

The only results I'm getting is a goofy Steiner thing that replaces the mag tube cap and this:

https://www.gggaz.com/images/detailed/4/Beretta-1301-Light-Mount.jpg

Is a design like that a good idea? Anyone have any better suggestions?

I’ve been looking at light options for about a month. Has anyone found a way to use the m-lok mount on the OEM barrel clamp? Arisaka suggested a couple of their m-lok mounts. I know they’re plastic and plastic ain’t steel but I also know that plastic can be strong enough.

The GGG is starting to look like a viable option. Has anyone tried one yet?

Thanks,

You planning on slinging your HD weapon? There's a very small chance of ever needing your weapon for HD - there's zero chance I'm going to be slinging it - there's a good chance if (in the unlikely event that I had to use it) that a sling would be a hindrance

If you use a bandoleer sling the weight of the extra shells keeps the sling out of the way during use. It is a win-win. Extra ammo (Buck/Slug/Less Than Lethal) and a useable sling.

Except for the pendulum attached to your door nob snagger.

Sounds lose/lose/lose

That last lose was for mixing less lethal ammo in with buck and slugs and referring to it as "less than lethal".

Handguard, CROM, Match saver, and ESSTAC shot cards showed up yesterday. Everything went on great, love the quality of the Aridus products, even if they are missed some QC. Going to play around with some grip tape to see what works better on the handguard. I can see the handguard getting slick very easily.

I don't find that the sling does anything for me moving around in the house except make it easier for me to get snagged on things like door knobs, chairs, etc.

I also don't want the gun strapped to me when the cops arrive because as well meaning as the local constabluary may be, the odds that the responding deputies will freak the fuck out and shoot me if they see a gun even near me are high.

I use the Streamlight 870 mount on mine. It mounts under the magazine cap on older guns. On yours it should cinch down nicely under the cover for the extended mag tube:

I have one of the 'pre production' 1301 Tacticals they pumped out back in July. Don't like pistol grips (on shotguns) so put a standard Beretta stock on it. Features I like; bolt release, the weight, and build quality is what you expect.

Ran it against my FN SLP. The 1301 ran great, but the SLP remains my favorite. Benelli makes a nice gun but the M4 never really did it for me.

I'll probably keep the 1301 but a better rifle stock would be a good upgrade. I've got Magpul furniture on my 590 SBS, and really like it, but am having a hard time thinking about doing that to a Beretta.

Edit: other upgrade will be a competition lifter whenever those come back in stock.

@SilasB  Which SLP do you own?

I've shot the 1301 a few years ago.  It cycled everything from birdshot, to standard buck shot, to tactical loads.  I wanted one badly but having to get my shoulder and bicep rebuilt made me reluctant about shotguns.

The 18" w/ a rifle stock. Really great shotgun, but needs heavier/faster shot for practice. Found that 1350FPS, 1 1/4 oz, 7.5 shot will cycle. Anything lighter or slower gets finicky, at least with mine.  Heard similar from other SLP owners.

The 1301 ate everything I threw at it.

Age and bad shoulders come for all of us. Stepping down to smaller gauges or easier energy management guns can help to a point. Have a couple of older friends who no longer shoot sporting clays with us because of bad shoulders..

That's the SLP I own.  It does fine with most everything except cheap birdshot.  It's a good shotgun but it left me a little less confident after it fte in a local 3-gun match using cheap birdshot.  I sent it back thinking that something was wrong but it wasn't.  Using better quality, higher velocity shells, it works fine.

I tried a 1301 at a demo.  It ate everything.  Of course, Beretta supplied the shotgun and the shells.

Has anyone opened up the loading port on their 1301 tactical? I know the competition models are opened up some already, along with having the longer receiver.

I’ve been thinking about opening up mine, I’m not planning on crazy 3 gun opened up, but it could certainly use some work.

Any tips? Just removing some metal doesn’t seem too bad, well within my capacity. I’d have to pick up some tools for this for sure, I think a number of small files and dremel bits. Any tips on getting it really smoothed and polished. Good files to use?
View Quote

If you want to do it yourself, remove metal slowly by hand with files and then do final polish with a dremel.

Using a dremel to remove lots of material has the potential to go bad quickly.

I have gone back and forth with this, any social use of the gun should simply have Flite Control 8 pellet buck in the pipe, and that stuff works well with a cylinder choke.

But playing or 3-gun you might want. Tighter choke for poppers and stars, and just because it’s nice to have options.

I’d rather have the choke....  but I’ve decided not to be in the market for one.  And yet I keep opening this thread.

Weapon retention is the only positive for HD.  After watching the Kenosha Kid vids I started rethinking slings.  Now every long gun gets it's own sling.

Best places to check are target sports and federal directly. I monitor target sports new inventory daily and you have to move fast when it pops up.

A tactic I’ve used during the pandemic is ask local cops where academy recruits buy their guns and ammo for the academy. Those store are usually small, not well know, and have inventory

Most .gov agencies have switched to rifles, so I doubt shotgun ammo is high on their list.  Sure they probably have some guns stowed away in the back but not like they're in regular use outside LTL use

Buddy just told me last week that the state of Ga will be getting rid of all of there 870sbs that they have had for less than 8yrs. Scaling back down to 3 guns per officer. This is for GSP & MCCD so I have been told. Unsure about DNR and other smaller state law factions.

I hope they go to QRF for blowout pricing. I’d buy a second 870sbs for $300.

I paid $1300 for mine back in the day as well.
Put a carrier comp tube on it and shoot piles of 1 oz cheap Walmart shot through it beside buck shot, slugs and everything in between.
I don’t understand where the idea they are not reliable comes from.

Age and bad shoulders come for all of us. Stepping down to smaller gauges or easier energy management guns can help to a point. Have a couple of older friends who no longer shoot sporting clays with us because of bad shoulders..

@SilasB  Which SLP do you own?

I've shot the 1301 a few years ago.  It cycled everything from birdshot, to standard buck shot, to tactical loads.  I wanted one badly but having to get my shoulder and bicep rebuilt made me reluctant about shotguns.

My SLP came with two pistons.  One for lighter and one for heavier loads.

You can get a light piston for a Browning Gold or a Winchester SX3 and put it in your SLP.  Same part.  Basically the same gun.
