the current EV tech is not the long term answer. there isnt enough power in the country to handle charging eveyrone's car if we all go to EVs.

we are close to market saturation for EVs. there are many situations where an EV simply doesnt work. like you live in the middle of nowhere, wyoming as one example.

hybrid is the correct middle term answer until EV tech evolves to use fuel cells with hydrogen or similar.

Ideally the car powers your house when there isn't power.

I don't live anywhere near the coast and hurricanes don't happen in Idaho. Even if they did I have more than 1 car.

I wouldn't take the Tesla on a road trip, it's for around town. The 3 row SUV is for road trips.

Yes, I like the tech and I like sentry mode.

Do you have a smart phone? Ring camera? Roomba? Security cameras that are connected to wifi?

EVs work well for day to day driving where your total mileage is less than it's range. Being able to make a 200 mile round trip on a single charge gets you father than most people drive in a day. I'd only have to charge up twice a week to take my kids to school and run all the local errands vs the 17-20 MPG I get in the 3 row SUV.

The grid can be supplemented with solar and batteries to store the excess power but I do like hybrids as well.

I have a whole home generator and 1000 gallon propane tank that can charge the Tesla fine…I normally wouldn’t just because it would be a waste of fuel for a normal outage.

Combined with 2 ICE vehicles I have options if the need arises….something GD normally advocates or is that bad if it involves EV’s?

Enjoy that $4.50 Diesel.

I have had three diesel sedans. Love the range, love the torque curve, hate having to wait to fill up because the only asshole at the pump pulled up to the only diesel pump at the place, and hate paying a premium for fuel. And on newer ones, hate DEF, and above all, hate repair bills for their overly complicated BS mandated emissions systems.

I'd love to see what a modern non or low emissions car could be. I think you could easily do a turbo 4 cylinder that got 40-45mpg in a full sized car or suv. You could probably go 50+ in something like a Rav 4 sized rig.

No government regulation for cars has not been a thing since 1958, sadly.

I know some will chime in and say the safety regulations were a good thing. That may be, but I will take liberty over government mandated security any day.

For some reason the EPA extra hates diesel and does everything it can to prevent it from being the overwhelming success it would otherwise be on the consumer market. There is so much cost built into every product in our everyday live just to pay for their insane mandates just on the things it's impossible not to use diesel for like commercial trucking, heavy mining and construction that I have to believe most people would be pissed to see how much that one government agency has cost every one of them.

When the power goes out for any length of time, I have trouble getting gas because there’s lines.

If you run out of gas on the Florida evacuation routes, you are just as stuck.

EVs do take longer to fill up, but a level 3 charger should get you from 20-80% in less than 30 minutes. That might be 10-15 more minutes than I need if I stop to fill up my CR-V and eat something, but in a 500 mile drive it’s not a big deal. Level 4 chargers are being installed now. That will speed things up.

Every modern car is a series of computers. Ford has 150 modules in their trucks, from dozens of suppliers who all use their own software. Tesla controls all of their software and does hundreds of OTA updates, like you do for your cell phone. Most other cars have to be flashed at the dealer. The infotainment module of one of my ICE cars died, and we replaced it for a “mere” $800. That car is burning oil and it’s going into the shop on Tuesday to figure it out. It had a vacuum leak so we had no power brakes. Fixing that cost $500.

Your cell phone is feeding data to Google (if you use any of their stuff like Google search, or Maps), I looked into it and they had 5 gigabytes of my stuff, including texts, emails, photos, everything. Facebook takes your stuff but to a lesser extent. Amazon is a data thief. If you have a Ring camera, it’s piped to Amazon, and to the police as needed. Microsoft will use your data to “improve” their software, unless you tell them not to.Your cell phone data is piped through the NSA.

I agree there isn’t enough power and the grid sucks, but that’s been true for a long time. A freeze in Texas showed us that. All the electricity does no good when the distribution system collapses. Rolling blackouts in California are routine.

I had a Camry hybrid. It was efficient, but a boring (and slow) appliance, like a toaster. It got me from point A to point B, but I’d never buy another. It couldn’t get out of its own way. Plus it’s an ICE vehicle with a layer of EV added to it. More maintenance than an ICE car.

You can do you and buy your ICE vehicles as long as you want. But the EV is the future. Even here in the U.S., growth in EVs is more than 50% in the past year. ICE vehicles are on the decline. In 10 years, they’ll be harder to get than a Blackberry. The model Y is on track to become the most popular car in the world this year. It’s trails only the Ford F150 here in the U.S.

But I’m going to get an EV for my next vehicle. I’ve kind of had my fill of ICE cars.

Great: you love them. You probably wrench on them and do your own service. Interesting that you are either using a computer or a cellphone to post on Arfcom.

There are people who won’t use a digital camera, they’re still developing their own film and prints in a darkroom.

Some people love vinyl records. There might even be a few who still use a dial telephone.

But most don’t want to drive a vintage car: parts are not being made anymore, they’re not efficient. They have no modern safety features.

I used to do much more on my old cars, but those days are over.

And you would be wrong! Many of the classic cars can be built from aftermarket parts without a original car available. There are that many places making parts.

Takes a lot less electricity to pump 20 gallons of fuel while on generator power than recharge a Tesla. Sure, Tesla makes sense as an addition or replacement to the old hotrod in the garage fun car, but the subsidy is as baseless as it gets, and its practicality is even worse.

Yeah I definitely don't like how they market it on their website. Someone on here mentioned that starting next year there was going to be a new way of handling it. I think they said it could come off at the dealer at the time of sale so I don't know if it's a different program or what.

While it is true that modern cars are safer, efficiency can be measured in different ways, and in actuality many of the needed parts are still available from places like Rockauto, even for cars made in the 1940s and 1950s.

Tax credit will end for Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive and Model 3 Long Range on December 31, 2023 based on current view of new IRA guidance. Take delivery by December 31 to qualify for full tax credit."

I'm gonna buy a new vehicle soon, probably before the end of January. But it will be a gasser, and it will have a V8. I have my carbon footprint to think about after all.
