DeNiro, OTOH, is never acting. He's just being DeNiro in every scene, and doing what DeNiro would do in that situation and pretending his name is Alphonse Capone, or James Conway, or Sam Rothstein, or Paddy Conway, or whatever the fuck the script says. It's still 100% Robert DeNiro every fucking time. Name a movie DeNiro was in that the character was fundamentally different from any other character he's ever played in any other movie. I'll wait.

It's a generic and useful character, sure, but he's not "acting" IMO.

Quoted:

His busy hands on the cane become counterpart to his eyes--they're both busied doing a whole bunch of nothing--but the overall focus is on his sense of auditory delight, which he expresses with his face and hands and body.

And he physically underscores the inability to perceive barriers by treating the glass (with the clipboard) and the wall (with his cane) roughly.

It's genius.

Wholly concur. He's pretending so well, he believes it, and it's natural, so we believe it easily.

Gary Oldman, OTOH, can play from Sirius Black to Winston Churchill, and 87% of the time you can't tell it's Gary Oldman without checking the credits, at least not with certainty. Be like, is that Gary Oldman? *checks IMDB

OK--but what DeNiro has, namely magnetism, he has in spades, and that's what he brings.

In his performances there is constantly an inner tension which the viewer is drawn toward reading, monitoring, and which you, the viewer, knows will somehow be decisive in whatever is about to happen, and you watch him with a sense of foreboding.  (The drinks are on the house, fellas...).

It's an innate quality.  Some people have it, and some people can fake having it, but it's money, and you can't make films without it.

I don't disagree, but I still say he's got an inordinately overrated sense of his own talent. A legerdemain in his own mine.

Agreed.

DeNiro is just overplayed.
