I was kind of hoping the priest would learn how to fight

I think it's pretty clear they're going the "I put up with all these hardships so God could have me introduce Christianity to these heathens" route.

My personal opinion of Ironclad was that it was a B movie with all the stereotypical plot points.  But that's of course after watching movies like Gladiator.  On the level of Ironclad, though, the movie Centurian was better, I thought, if you like action.  Interesting thing is, there are probably more Roman reinactors in Europe than we have Civil War guys here, and a very historically accurate movie could be made of Roman Gaul or Britain even.

Anyways, he's been typecast in a lot of good movies. I was hoping in Vikings, he would be Eric the Red.  My favorite part is in the first beach fight scene, it cuts to a long shot and you can see him just towering over the Saxons.

Oh I agree. I don't even remember if Ironclad got distributed or not. I just remember it being a surprise on Netflix, and some decent gory swordplay with James Purefoy using a bastard sword.

The Raid is up on History's website now for those of us without cable tv.

Not sure why they did the pre-release on the first 4 and now a post-airing for the 5th... Might need to take that one up with their marketing execs and the scheduler.

Still digging the show. Enough that I looked up the real characters that Ragnar and Lagertha are based off of. They are definitely re-working history for the show. I wasn't expecting them to use Saxo Grammaticus as a verbatim source though, so I'm not disappointed in the least...

Nein! The priest represents the vikings eventual switch from paganism to Christianity and the start of the northern crusades.

That is why the priest does not understand why god would send him there, but he realizes it is to bring christ to these pagans (IE why he clings to his bible). Christianity becomes a very powerful tool on conquest for certain viking lords to wage war on the rest of the north.  Vikings become christian ---> granted the kingdom of Normandy----> invade england-----> William the conqueror becomes the norman King of England.

Well the previews show them both fighting.  I have a feeling it will become some sort of draw and neither will win.  I can't believe they would kill off the Earl so early in the show, and the Earl can't win because he would certainly put Ragnar to death immediately, either by his own sword or have him tried/executed or something.

Interesting part last night when the Earl referenced that, with Ragnar dead, the West is now opened up to them.  Wasn't it once it was discovered?  Or did he find the water compass?

I don't know much about viking combat, but I'm digging all the small axe/tomahawk fighting. I've always thought it makes for great fight choreography.

Ragnar was parrying a lot with his axe since he was without a shield in the fight scene this episode. Would a wooden handle prevent a sword from biting into it, or sliding down the shaft and taking off their hand? I'd think you'd be missing fingers if you did that long enough.

From what I have read, the axe was a preferred weapon for many Vikings in the early Viking period.  Especially in the ninth century.  The axe brings a lot of energy to the point of contact.  It can shatter a wooden shield easier than a sword and also break bones a lot easier.  They also required less metal to make.  Swords were expensive and required a lot of iron to make.  Analysis done on some recovered Viking swords from the early period actually revealed that a lot of them were made with poor quality iron.  One has to remember that they lived on the edge of the known world during the "Dark Ages" and things got to them last.

It wasn't until the introduction of the Ulfberht sword the it became a weapon of choice for the Vikings.  This happened in the middle Viking period.  This was a huge leap forward  in both metallurgy and design.  There was a great NOVA episode called "Secrets of the Viking Sword"that details this pretty good.

Here's one on forging an axe. A lot of the axe heads they are finding are similar to this pattern. Mostly iron, a welded eye, and a harder steel blade welded to the front end to hold an edge.
