This is actually quite good advice.

The other things I wish I has listened to when I was new;

-Slow down.
-Take a breath, calm down.
-Don't waste money equipping your vehicle.

Our department has equipped vehicles and trucks. Why would I?

Depending on your location lights may be a necessity.  I am an EMT and do scene response to med calls.  So lights do wonders.  However I just run one dash light and two single lights on the brushguard.

Far from a Christmas tree but gets it done and people generally yield without issue

Get every class you need to be paid.

Don't get involved with the volly politics.

Stay out of the cliques.

Limit yourself to one sticker, and only wear FD clothing when on duty.

Was a Volunteer for 5 years while working EMS, now I'm a Career guy and would still Volunteer if there were any departments near me. Loved every second of it.

Vehicle meaning yours. Lots of people with hundreds or thousands of dollars in emergency lighting, sirens and other stuff on a personal vehicle just to scoot on down to the station. I was guilty. Barely made a difference in response times. If the truck leaves before you get there, get on the next one.

Because some agencies allow C3 response in POV's.
And in some areas it is necessary otherwise response times will be ineffective.
Ours requires two years of service with at least one year of apparatus certification & experience, as well as biennial EVOC.

good for you OP, stick with it.  do the right thing even when no one is looking, your performance will be noticed good or bad.  Guaranteed.  And don't avoid medical, train up and embrace it.

My first try at embedding. Yeah it's vertical, but I know the guy that took the vid.
The moment of the explosion ,13 volunteer firefighters died.

RIP

Good on you, OP.  Do your service with pride and humility, don't  let it define you. I was volunteer fire and civil defense in the town I grew up in, no flashing lights for me but I was there when I was needed. When the sirens would wail we would always pay attention to the pattern, it was our cue.  A lot of memories and stories of those days, more good than bad.
